I've been trying to find the actual winch online, but haven't been able to. No matter how you look at it, finding the G and then getting the winch as a gift from friends is tremendous. Of course, now comes the question of mounting it. I've seen many of you discuss building bumpers to house the winch and have even seen the custom fabrication job done by individuals on this site. My question is this, I know ORC makes a costly bumper that will house a Warn winch, and I have kinda wanted a brush/bumper guard for the front of the truck. what are the pros and cons to buying the ORC setup and mounting the winch and brush/bull guard on the G?

Wow, you've got very nice frineds. I'm one of those who has custom winch bumper. I thought about buying ORC's but decided not to do so because I will have lower approach angle. (I'm talking about ORC's stock looking bumper, not the tube type bumper). Winch is mounted on the same height as the bumper and sticks out from the bumper. That means, you'll have lower approach angle. Also, you need to relocate AT oil cooler. I was also told that ORC bumper can not hold 9.5 ti. I think XD9000 shold fit fine. Yasu

It is a good design, and it doesn't reduce the approach angle by too much. It comes with a bracket to mount the oil cooler behind the winch, where it still gets some air cooling. It is designed for the 9000-type winch that has a separate solenoid pack, and it is a tight fit, so you might want to double check the dimensions of whatever winch you end up with before you order the ORC. Although I am very particular about maintaining the original appearance and functionality of my G, the tube type bumper does add a bit of "panache" to the vehicle, and appears to be designed with off road advantages in mind. I am referring to the black tube type ORC bumper without the bull bar... I also meant to ask, does adding that much weight in front of the tires adversely affect the handling characteristics of the vehicle much? Edited by Adoni 5/21/2006 5:38 PM

When a winch was added at the factory, stronger springs were used. (Why not complete your profile to let us know where you are located?)

I will probably custom build a bumper, as I'm not particularly impressed with most of I've seen for the G. If I do, I will probably have a local shop fab the parts, using thier CNC equipment. I'm thinking along the lines of the Aussie style Perentie bumpers that are very functional, not too large, have removable ends for utlimate off-roading, and they are flat on top for standing. I built one like this for my airportable LR, with a few mods like tread-plate on top, as that's where you always end up standing once the truck's sunken in the mud up to the bumper and your trying to work with the winch and not get yourself stuck in the mud, or get leeches stuck on your legs, etc. Plus, it makes a convenient place to put your tools while performing field repairs, not that we'd ever have to do that in a G. I'd post a pic, but I can't seem to find it. I believe I posted on on the old defunct forum, I'll see if I can locate it. Garret

I got rid of my stock bumper because it bends easily when I hit it. Also, it seems that it can not hold original shape any more I didn't want to drive my G with a winch all the time, so my winch is removable with only 4 bolts. I usually drive mine without it. Using nylon rope will reduce the weight very much. I couldn't carry my winch with steel wire to the second floor but I can with nylon rope. Yasu

Captain Spalding Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Winch Questions I have the ORC stock-style bumper on my 463. Approach angle isn't bad, especially if you plan to use synthetic winch rope, as you can then chuck the roller fairlead and opt for a hawse style, which protrudes much less. I like the composite one from RockBuggy Supply I am not sure that the ORC stock-style bumper will fit a 460. It does not show up in a search for 460 winch mount systems, but does for 463. This may be an oversight on their part. The reference made above to the transmission cooler does not apply to your vehicle. The factory brush bar is mediocre, IMHO. The winch you are referring to is the Warn XD9000. It lacks some of the electronic bells and whistles (good or bad, depending on your POV), but is the only winch certified by ORC to fit in their winch bumper.
