Re: Hood you can stand on... ?

I figure anything that can get past my big @as ARB bumper deserves an opportunity to try and decrapitate me.

Caveat:  The crumpling hood is an important part of crash safety.  Also, you might want to stop and think of the possibility of a guillotine effect in a frontal accident.

Not trying to stir the pot, but I honestly don't think there are any crumple zones designed into the G. I think the frame is intended specifically to prevent any sort of crumpling.

Cheers,

Michael

RE: Hood you can stand on... ?

Regarding Crumple Zones: Even though it sounds strange, I remember reading in The legend keeps on driving: 25 years of Mercedes-Benz G-Class (2004), a discussion of the extension of lessons-learned from the automotive werks, and transferred to the Gwagen - with respect to crumple zones.  The G seems more like a brute-force and rigid concrete block, take-no-prisoners design. Yet, lurking in there somewhere, are structural accommodations that represent compromise, and therefore safety for driver and the poor fool who runs into a G.

Having straightend out a more than a few front ends of G Wagens, I can confirm they do have crumple zones starting with the front bumper mounts and going back into the chassis as far as the fire wall and first body mount, there are also zones at the rear following the same pattern, I did show detailed pics of a rebuild and commented that it didn't seem a good idea to mount a winch to the bumper when you saw what held the bumper to the frame.
The thing that won't move much if you hit one hard enough is the engine.

Appears his passenger may have hit his/her head on the windshield. Ouch.

So is the stand on hood a direct bolt on?

RE: Hood you can stand on... ?

Brian,

of course its a direct bolt on - its a Mercedes for heaven's sake!
Only on Jeeps you have to grind a little here and force it there.

I have a picture somewhere that I took at the factory in Graz showing the sandwich construction of the hood.
I'll find it.

If you YouTube G280 CDI Edition30.Pur, there is one video that gets up close shots of the hood. I think it's done by Mercedes4x4.pl. There are also videos showing the pur being used offroad and one of them has two people climbing on the hood.

RE: Hood you can stand on... ?

I ended up buying a hood from Guido last Fall that was off of the Pur edition EPC search. The part number is A4618803457. At the time I ordered it in Germany, it was not in the MBUSA parts system. I spoke with a couple people in New Jersey to try and get it added to no avail, so I ended up having to pay shipping from Germany. There was some forum action on it at CGW at the time and presto, a couple of months later I find that it is now in the MBUSA parts database. None in USA or Germany at present according to a search by my dealer earlier today, but it can be ordered from here now. It was sitting in my garage waiting for some fenders to go off to the paint shop and it all finally came together a few weeks ago. Now I am tearing the front end down and pulling the fenders.

The hood went on remarkably easy, a half hour job. It is exactly the same as the 460 and 463 hood up to MY 2000. In 2001+ the air intake on the underside of the hood changed, so that would need to be cut out and put into the Pur hood to use on a MBUSA G-class vehicle.
Here are a couple of pics, more to follow.

Re: Hood you can stand on... ?

When I mounted the walk on hood, it no longer had the emissions stickers which would allow me to take the car to California for future registration. Seeing as how I am originally from CA, it has been something I wanted to take care of eventually. The original hood has been sitting in my basement for few years and was recently repainted for another G project The shop was able to have the stickers reproduced for me. It took a couple tries to get them accurate, but they also were able to make a couple extra sets just in case I messed them up.
I posted them in the classifieds here in case any one else is in a similar situation.

Eric,

I've been advised recently by Russ Leabch that those stickers are no longer a guarantee that you can get it registered in Kalifornicate. Rules and regs have changed with the times.

That question came up from a potential buyer for my G.

Re: Hood you can stand on... ?

Your G is such a great deal, I just cannot believe it has not sold yet.

Russ would know, I'm sure he has had to deal with a lot of California registration and title issues. Thanks for that info.
