| Fading LCD screen
I know the subject has been breached before, but, I'm to the point where if the temperature is anywhere above room temperature, the edges fade and only the middle of the screen is visible.
Knowing that MB shared parts w/ W203/209, and looking at clusters on eBay (see attached picture from a C240), I was to the point of purchasing one to rip apart for the screen (hoping it didn't have the same problem mine does), but I stumbled on http://audipixelrepair.com/lcd-display-mercedes-w203-w209 as a source for new W203/209 LCD screens.
I've read the W203 forums where they've had no issues w/ replacement, but was curious if anyone here had done something similar to a 463 cluster?

I bought five of those on ebay a while back. They work fine.
To remove the cluster you need some Mercedes hooks. I might have some photos of how it looks.
The installation is not so difficult. The cluster comes apart by just releasing all the tabs around the join.
It is possible to screw things up if you aren't careful. My speedo pointer fell off it's spindle when I turned the cluster over, and it was very complicated getting it back on.

Did it require any DAS/STAR adaptation as well? Or was this a plug and play job? |

Plug and play. It's just a display, there is no processor on it.
One other thing - when you re-assemble it, be sure to blow any dust out . The inside of the curved glass attracts lots of static and dust, and then it is really obvious from the other side, but by the time you notice it will be all back together and a big pain to clean. |

Just tried mine. The whole thing is over lit I can see the characters but its not usable the way it is.

Just noticed mine is missing that little blue resistor on the right in the above photos.
Anyone know what is up with that?
Photo 1874 above, right near the insertion point of the ribbon cable

The resistor is probably adjusting contrast. A variable resistor would allow you to dial it in just right. |

I must have missed this question first time around. Apologies.
The blue resistor was added by me, per the instructions that came with the LCD. I will see if I can find those. Basically you have to take a voltage reading on some pin on the connector, and depending on the result of that you select the correct resistor value from a table in the instructions, and solder it in. It corrects the viewing angle. It was different for every one of the five replacement screens I tried. |

I should add that I tried playing with adding that resistor to the original Mercedes-original display, and it did not do anything. So this is not a fix for dim displays. |

Really appreciate you posting that.
I can measure as it specifies and i can solder pretty well but I don't understand the resistor selection as it is written.
Their example, 2.2-1.7 times 4.7? Where did the 4.7 come from? |

I think their example is wrong...
The 4.7 is the 4K7 (4700 ohm) resistor. The K replaces the comma in 4,700.
For large resistor values, the abbreviations K and M are used for one thousand and one million. To keep the convention standard, R is used to represent 0. Because of problems in seeing the decimal point in some printed texts, the 3 letters: K M or R are used in place of the decimal point. Thus, a 2,700 Ohm resistor is written 2K7 and a 6.8 Ohm resistor is written 6R8
In the example, a 4700 ohm resistor applied between V2 and a +5V source will raise the voltage on V2 by 0.1 volts.
Taking the difference between the expected 2.2V and the measured 1.67V and multiplying by the 4700 gives 2491, rounding up, 2500, or in resistor speak 2K5 (not the 25K they list). I think their text is wrong in the example they provided..

So we have drey, djdinaz, and myself, all G owners! and my lcd always fades in the summer time. Seems like we should all get together over a beer or two to compare Gs and displays.  |

LCD display on my truck was fading during the day, very top and bottom lines only, just like many of you with the same issue. I've got the new screen from Amazon, and it works great except that I can't see anything with sunglasses on.
There are tons of sellers on Ebay and Amazon, but I am afraid that everyone is selling the same product. I am not sure if I want to put back the old one which really didn't bother me much or keep the new one in since I don't wear the sunglasses all the time.
Does anyone know if there is better LCD display like OEM available? |

Very interesting!
I have been researching this and with the many suppliers there are some that "hint" to their product having VDO manufactured screens . But no one I have found ever says anything, in their ad, about the resistor modification. All that I have asked about visibility with sunglasses have replied with a no.

It all has to do with polarization direction of the display and the lenses and I have no clue how they supposed to work. When I turn my sunglasses sideways(90 degree up or down), the screen looks perfect.
I maybe able to fix it by attaching the correct direction polarized film on to LCD display or I'd just buy another sunglasses without polarization. I thought about returning it, but I am going to keep it since it's so clear and crisp. |
