Rear Jump/Longitudinal Seat - 2002 G500

I saw that a few peeps had this feature when in Oregon. I would like to install one in my vehicle (with seatbelts). That way I can throw the dogs AND the kids in back ... wife too if necessary.

Any suggestions on where/what to purchase? Any used ones for sale perhaps? Feel free to comment on your experience with this seating feature. Dr. Otiswesty I think I saw this in your Overland G?

My interior is grey leather ... and I always tie my own shoes.

Thanks in advance.

Yup. My suggestion is do not do it. It is not deemed to be safe in a crash for little ones. Head hitting the rear glass and such. JMHO.

Wow. Just saw the price tag at 4x4club too ... yikes.

I would like to get at least 1 side ... but I am probably looking at $3k USD! I have more preventative maintenance among other things that I see in the coming days/months where that money will be spent better.

If anyone finds themselves with a used spare 1 for 2002 G500 LWB ... feel free to hit me up.

Re: Rear Jump/Longitudinal Seat - 2002 G500

They're the same seats for all 463 that i've ever heard of, so as long as they come out of a truck that 1990 or newer, they'll fit in any truck, including newer... the nuts are welded to the vehicles body behind the interior panels, you just have to cut the holes to mount. It is however possible that they've stopped including the nuts welded to the body of the car, but that would need to be checked.

I think use of seatbelts with them was just something Europa did. The German noted intent of them is for putting boots on in foul weather situations. They are in fact nice for that. I've used them for short drives to lunch with people, and they're fun and people kind like sitting in them for their novelty even if they aren't that comfortable. it does seem that every once in a while you'll see some come up for sale... might be easier and cheaper to source them used from europe.

Totally. I kind of want to use it for the same thing ... throw the wet kids and dogs back there after the beach with all their crap ... hit up ice cream ... or a bar. Looks fun. No way in hell I would have anyone back there when I am mobbing across state and/or country.

I just purchased some new Recaro Child Seats for the high speed commuting (in reality/comparison, I do not drive very fast) ... and off road trips. Wife gets strapped to my new roof rack. Don't worry, she likes it up there.

I have the 2002 MBUSA G500 ... and don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. It would make my life easy if the welded mounted portion were still part of the MBUSA package. I'll have the guys at Collie take a look this weekend when I drop off ...

Re: Rear Jump/Longitudinal Seat - 2002 G500

Hi Carne hos,
I have an earlier grey leather jumpseat from a 463 in my 2002. It is not a perfect fit and required a very minor modification due to the different shape of the side interior panel. The bolt pattern is the same for all 463 jump seats and the 2002 models have the threaded inserts in the body. All you need to do is put the holes in the panel. Easy.

Alan McR is selling his (black) jumpseats but wants a hole free panel in exchange. I think Eurotruck had a used seat or two in stock, check with them. The 4x4club 463 jump seats are new and worth it, Eurotruck sells them as well by special order. I love mine for putting on ski boots and also roll with a bunch of kids around for short distances, it gives a bit more seating flexibility safety issues aside.

I had 2 jumpseats in my 460, but actually wouldn't put another one in my 200 G500 if it was free. The cargo space is slightly reduced, and there is precious little of it behind the 2nd row of seating. Check ebay and ebay.de as well.

You can add lap belts, but safety is still not their best feature.
Used ones sell in the range of 500-800 plus shipping in ebay.de and you will need to recover them to match interior.

Yep, unsafe.

prbmeat - I was at the meet at Dai's but I only had half of my jump seats in (one side was removed). At one point in time there were four seat belts for the seats. When it was federalized the seat belts were removed (I think).

Perfect. You illustrated the same reasons I want one ... change into running gear, put on ski boots, quick runs to the beach (safety reasons aside), place to duct tape wife (when roof rack is full), etc. I am just going to install 1 ... the opposite side of my CD changer.

If anyone has a used one (preferably grey) please feel free to PM me and we can coordinate price. I'de like to get a new one but I am finding that used stuff works great for me (since my kids will trash it) ... as long as it fits.

Dr. O thanks to you and all for the input and looking forward to seeing you and your clan soon ...

Re: Rear Jump/Longitudinal Seat - 2002 G500

Repost here from earlier ....

For third row seats, depending on the number of little ones you are planning to have
on board, I would put 2 PUR seat bases and find 2 used pre '02 463 (or 460) front seats, remove the arm rests and put them in the 2nd row. I never try 2002+ front seats. it might work with minimum modifications.

Use the orig 2nd row long bench seat and have new anchors made for your third row. Lap belts are already there so you can fit up to 6 persons legally or 4 persons
nicely when making expedition trips and have the 3rd row
seat removed for supplies. The entry to the third row can be from either rear doors thru the middle of the two rear seats and not needed from the tail gate which is a
BIG +

I ve already done the PUR mod for the 2nd row which is a bolt on solution but not for third row. I am debating if I should use the SWB version or the LWB rear bench
seats. I am not sure of the width of the SWB if this will fit due to the wheel wells.
The SWB bench seat allow 3 persons with lap belts so a total of 7 persons can legally fit in your G.

If you are lucky and find same used 463 front seats, your interior will match nicely!

Re: Rear Jump/Longitudinal Seat - 2002 G500

If you can get Alan to part with one of his jump seats straight up for a bit of cash, that would probably be the easiest solution. Black would match your gray interior well enough.

A new late 463 jump seat is not too bad considering what you are getting if you are only buying one. A pair would be a chunk of coin. I paid $850 for my single from JvT and that was 3 years ago. For seat belts, I have used VW Vanagon rear lap belts, they work great and are easy to find on the www.thesamba.com classifieds or a local used parts source. They are also Repa parts, OEM for the Mercedes Gelandewagen.

RE: Rear Jump/Longitudinal Seat - 2002 G500

A little unrelated but not worth starting a new thread for.......

Does anyone know how much roughly both the rear seats weight on an MB usa G.

I do not want to take them out to find out.

They are heavy as hell and require a special tool to remove and reinstall.

Been there and done that. Not an easy task.

I'm glad the 460 is simple; two pins holding the back and 21mm (maybe it was 17mm) bolts holding the bottom on. But they seem to be made of lead because they are unbelievably heavy. I have never taken so much ibuprofen after taking them out and putting them back in.

Eric - is that where you're putting the Ziegler hatch?

Here is a set in gray.

Easy to recover the top of seat and sell the second seat if you do not want it.

Installing seatbelts on the 463 Rear Jump Seat

I had belts on my 2002 G500 jump seats and never got around to installing them on my current 1999 G500. I just picked up a nice set of Vanagon rear lap belts which is what I used on my 2002 G.
They are VW, not Mercedes, but nice German made Repa belts.
Here's a pic.

Installing seatbelts on the 463 Rear Jump Seat

The bolt size that I used was something I had in stock already in the garage. By the looks of it, a 60mm bolt would suffice.

I tried to just drive out the existing bolts with the new ones, but the side with the hydraulic shock made it impossible. My previous seat was an earlier version with a side buckle instead of the shock, so that went easier.
Someone had done some work on my seat before as one of the bolts was SAE and the other metric. In any case, I had to compress the shock in order to easily pass the new bolt with the seatbelt flanges.

The procedure was:
Remove the two plastic lock pins at the top behind the seatback.
Remove seatback plastic cover
Remove 2 8mm bolts at top of seat back and remove phillips head screw at bottom of seatback on front.

Now all 8 of the mounting bolts are readily accessible .
remove all eight10 mm mounting bolts.
Apply Gerald's nice shock compressor or make one yourself or use an extra large hose screw clamp

Remove the bolts one at a time and replace with M6 replacement bolts of 60-68mm length.
Tighten down and reinstall in reverse order.
