Replacing mounts on transfer case of 2000 model 461

Gentlemen

The one mount of the transfer case (LHS rear) have been looking dodgy for a while and I did buy a new one quite long ago but have not done it. Now when trying to remove the bolt it was stuck inside the steel sleeve of the rubber mounting. I could not get it out eventually destroying the rubber around it, which happened quite quickly since it was cracked all round. I tried to pry it out but no luck. Then to the manual to see how to replace the mount and it seems one need a special tool to press out the old rubber and another one to push it back - anybody done this before?

What worries me is that the new mount looks different from the the one on my 460, where I can clearly see how it is supposed to work. It looks as if it has an outer and inner sleeve similar to the bushes on trailing arms. Refer to attached pictures. I looked at the part ordered under this VIN and it looks different from what i see in the 461 even if it is ordered against the correct VIN. I also attach a snip form the the EPC where the guy at the dealer confirmed the part number for the kit. It seems the 461 mount has a polymer bush (could cut or scratch it while trying to clean out the rubber) outer then the rubber and steel bolt sleeve (similar to the trailing arm bushes) where the 460 has a dumbbell shaped rubber with only the steel sleeve insert. The lips of the dumbbell is visible on the 460 mounting and not there with 461.

Could it be that the dumbbell one is a retrofit for the factory fitted one on the 461 and I just have to push everything out?. How does the mounts on the 463 looks like?
Any advice will be appreciated since our local dealers does not have a clue – they can only show what is on the EPC..

It does look like the new part is a replacement for a previously sleeved part.  If you measure the diameter of the center part of the new rubber, does it match up with the inside of your remaining sleeve, or the part that the sleeve is pressed into?

Thanks for reply Alan - I also thought that initially and thought that somehow the rubber fused to the sleeve and that is why i tried to pry it out. but then checked the size and realized the new rubber will never get in there..

But one of our local members remembered that he had gone through the same exercise about 10years ago and then he found that this type of mounting is different, having and outer and inner sleeve. So he found some part numbers which we will check with MB tomorrow - hopefully they have at a decent price. It was quite expensive at the time so he had them made up.

Seems like you would remove the outer metal sleeve and press in the rubber mount. May be an updated design. Given that the bolt is vertical, the original design may not be necessary and the update could take that into account.

I have replaced the TC mount on my 1999 463 and it is totally different.

The outer is plastic - lip goes on top so i have to push the old one out to the top - not sure i can lift the transfer case enough
I tried to push it using a bottle jack and a 24 socket which is slightly smaller than the OD of bush - lifted the chassis but no movement on bush - seems that it is going to be a challenge..

Sometimes the easiest way to get the bushing out is to cut it radially from the inside.  That takes the strain off of it and allows it to be tapped out easily.  That is how I get the control arm bushings out.
