WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR REMOVAL

Hi Everyone.

My 93 500GE has a problem with the windshield wiper motor. The wipers stopped working and blow the fuse. When I disconnected the plug at the motor at the
firewall in engine compartment, the motor housing appears to be broken, allowing the motor to just spin back and forth. So, I need to replace it.

With the electrical connector unplugged, it does not blow fuses and has current for both the low and high speed, so its a motor problem.

My question is how to remove the motor. Can this be done from the engine bay or do I also need to pull the dash cover, etc. from inside the car?

It appears that there are mounting screws that hold the motor in place and also there appears to be a nut that would be on the shaft that connects to the linkage.

I replaced the wiper control arms in my second 500GE a few years ago, and that required me to remove the dash cover inside the car to access the linkage, but I did not replace the motor.

The motor part numbers are: Bosch: 0390246137 and Mercedes part: 0028204442

If anyone knows of a good replacement motor and where to find it outside of MB, please let me know also.

I don't want to take the inside of the dash apart on this one, if I don't have to.

Thank you for your help. If anyone has work shop instructions and can email them to me, that would be appreciated.

In closing, I wish each and everyone of you and your families a Happy Holiday Season and a Safe and healthy 2020.

RE: WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR REMOVAL

I haven't actually done this. However, from the drawings, it appears that one might be able to pull the motor out far enough to reach the linkage and disconnect it.  As far as I can tell, you have nothing to lose in trying.  Failing that, I'd pull the instrument cluster and see if access is good enough that way.

Re: WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR REMOVAL

You can remove the wiper motor without removing the dash.

The wiper shaft linkage connects to the motor in a ball-and-socket fashion. You need to remove the screws that hold the motor to the firewall, and then use a flathead to pry the ball of the linkage off of the back of the motor. You have to be very very careful with the linkage b/c it can bend and then you are likely faced with dash removal.

Also worth noting that your motor may not be caput. The brushes can be refreshed. I did this on my old 460 years ago.

Re: WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR REMOVAL

Thanks everyone,
The three bolts did allow me to remove the motor from the firewall, the motor had bound some how breaking the three mounting posts.
So, I removed the dash and also replaced the wiper linkage and spindles along with the motor. Everything is now new and working correctly.
Thanks again.
