Help 463 2002 Electrical Issue

Guys,

This morning on way to work I lost power to the dash board. No illumination on in-dash display and rpm, mph and fuel needles all stuck. No turn signals or headlights. Command, seat heaters, radio all work. Command did seem dimmer than usual. Not sure if its related but when I turn off the ignition the blue high beam indicator light flashes very dimly. Truck starts fine (no weak cranking etc.) and otherwise ran OK until I arrived at office.

I think I am on borrowed time on battery but have not had any previous indications suggesting a weakened condition. I can check voltage at battery tonight when I get home but is there something else I should be looking at?

Thank you for any assistance and Happy New Year!

Re: Help 463 2002 Electrical Issue

I suggest that you use a voltmeter and check the alternator.
Most alternators charge at 13.5 volts or higher
My 2002 G was notorious for electrical problems that made no sense until the alternator went out.
Once replaced that electrical problems ended.

Re: Help 463 2002 Electrical Issue

I experienced this situation. My heated windshield nozzles were the culprit. I unplug them, reset the fuse and the dashboard worked again. Got new nozzle and was back in business.

Re: Help 463 2002 Electrical Issue

Thanks for suggestions. I checked the simple stuff. #41 and 52 fuses and am getting 13.58v at the battery. I removed the instrument cluster and cleaned the plug. the rpm, speed and fuel needles did not reset. I put it all back together and still no power to anything running through the cluster turn signals etc. I can't tell if the issue is in the instrument cluster itself or power delivery to the cluster. The illuminated panel flashes one thin horizontal line upon startup and then just black so looks like it may be getting power? Also the high beam indicator blinks 4 or 5 times when I turn the ignition off.

RE: Help 463 2002 Electrical Issue

Could it be as simple as a bad LCD screen? Does the screen control power to the rest of the cluster somehow?

"A.C. Ripple" used to be a problem for the U.S. 2002 models. http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.asp?tid=22158&po...

How old is the battery and have you stopped by your local favorite auto parts store to have the battery tested in situ?

RE: Help 463 2002 Electrical Issue

J.R.

The battery is an MB unit and has date of 02/08. I used the opportunity to change out the battery with new unit earlier today as preventative maintenance. As I read when the MB battery goes it goes without warning. Still no power to instrument cluster even with new battery. I think the next thing to determine is if I am getting power to plug in back of cluster.

Wow. I would say you got your monies worth out of that battery. Just for SA, I have attached my 2000 fuse panel image, recognizing that you have a 2002. did you check the continuity of the fuses that you pulled out?

Concur with your approach to look for voltage at the back of the cluster.

RE: Help 463 2002 Electrical Issue

Yes checked continuity with DMM on #42. # 51 is shared fuse and the other component is working so I suspected that one would be OK. Just checked it to be certain.

I agree. The front SAMs and the associated connectors can be easily damaged by water leakage.

RE: Help 463 2002 Electrical Issue

Guys

At this point I would like to confirm if power is getting to the cluster. Can someone more knowledgeable direct me to which pins in the instrument cluster plug should get 12v power when the key is turned on? Assuming it is not getting power I will go in search of corrosion on CAN/SAM.

RE: Help 463 2002 Electrical Issue

You said that you have no headlights or turn signals, which for me, points to an issue with the SAM or CAN bus as these items are controlled by the SAM and not by the instrument cluster.

RE: Help 463 2002 Dead Instrument cluster

Guys,

A quick update that may help others in the future. A couple years back Harold experienced a dead instrument cluster. Ultimately it looks like Alan was able to repair his with some solder work. During the troubleshooting, djdinaz posted the readings for the pins in the plug at the back of the instrument cluster. Today I confirmed 12v at pin 5 with ignition off and 12v at pin 6 with on. I also had continuity between CAN pins and voltage at each pin. My conclusion at this point is that the instrument cluster itself failed. I have it boxed for shipment to a repair shop. I will post up when I get diagnosis back from them.

Thanks to all who have posted and sent PMs. I appreciate the assistance in getting this sorted out.

Aloha,

RE: Help 463 2002 Electrical Issue

I spoke with the repair shop and he did not give a definitive answer on what was wrong with my cluster. He just sort of avoided the question like a trade secret. I would still highly recommend them to others as it is a lot cheaper alternative than a dealer replacement. Upon return of my cluster, I did have readouts for the two functions after having been in 4 wheel drive. I took it to a dirt lot down the street from the house shifted in and out of 4 wheel drove home turned off and back on and all codes cleared.

I sent my cluster to FastOEM in Santa Monica, CA. The owners name is Dave. They actually list No Power as one of the options on their web site so it is a MB problem they are familiar with.

Hopes this helps others
