2011 G55 / M113K vs 2014 G 63 / M157 - Engine/Trans - Reliabiliity

Anyone here have solid info on these two options?

Any help appreciated or direction to other sources. I've searched google as well as on several forums, here, ClubGwagen, Exportal, etc, to no real insight on these two.

My gut says the G55 but I also wonder if claims about "issues" with the M157 are just overblown by those loud voiced (fww ?) who had issues. For example I was worried for the first several years about my 2007 Land Rover LR3 air suspension...but after 18 years and 240,000 miles, these worries never came to a reality, even with it built out to 8200 lbs.

Also, while the dash and center controls come across as more modern on the G63, I just feel like the old shifter mechanism must be simpler and more reliable than the cool modern tech version. I've also never liked the idea of "e-brake" by push button. What if you have no power, no brake? I think some basic important things should have a simpler interface, like a cable to a handle vs electronics or electric motors being required for it to function.

I'd be putting on slightly taller springs also for more load anyway so the supposed ride quality is irrelevant.
Either will be "debadged" so I don't really care for the "K" vs a "63" or "AMG", but I do like the engine and growl.

The only real practical aspect of the G55 is the smaller wheel size without issue vs probably sticking with a limit of 18" on the 63, which I am actually fine with, probably, seeing as it can fit 34-35" pretty easily.

The other practical issue is the G55 does NOT come with factory 2" receiver but I found back then that an aftermarket, or even MB parts could be installed via DIY.

Lastly, I have seen some winch bumpers that work with the oil coolers in factory location, such as offered by "Jackwagen". I'm not as concerned about the winch but I do like having a stout bumper for the literal "bull" protection. Side steps would come off both and a very large Bundutop roof tent would go on either one.

2nd battery for either as well as on board air and 2nd row seats removed.

So, it mostly comes down to the engine and trans. I've had my LR3 since 2007, new, so I imagine this would be a 15-20 year route as well.

I found this list of thoughts on the various engines across the recent years from a Reddit discussion:

Here are some corrections (NA Market Only): 1. M113 Came in 2002 - 2008 in the G500 - Very reliable 2. AMG M113 (no supercharger) came in only 2003 - 2004 in the G55 - Very reliable, but very uncomfortable due to the stiffer AMG suspension

3. AMG M113K (with Supercharger) came in 2005 - 2011 G55 (identified by the 'Kompressor' badge) and from 2005 - 2009 it was pretty much the same car, but 2010 - 2011 got some updates - Very reliable as well and there isn't much of a difference in maintaince costs compared with M113 other than additional pulleys needing replacing, and a premium price on AMG specific parts. These years also reverted back to the more comfortable G500 suspension

4. M273 came in 2009 - 2015 G550 (new engine + new name), and these aren't as reliable as the M113. They aren't bad, but they do have timing chain issues, but they're definitely not a BMW engine. I'd personally go for the G55 of the same year

5. M157 AMG came in the 2013 - 2018 G63 - Not very reliable... early ones are known to burn a lot of oil, and same can have compression issues which totals the engine. These also are the first g wagons with twin turbos, and there have been some reports of the turbo's failing. Overall would not recommend..

6. M176 came in the 2016 - 2018 G550's and G550 4x4. not too unreliable.. but not as reliable as the M273.

7. M120 AMG V12 came in the 2016 - 2018 G65. This is a very reliable engine and there are no known issues with these engines (coil pack issues been resolved from the earlier versions), however, expect high maintenance costs since there isn't a lot of room to work on these cars, and high parts prices on AMG V12 components.

Overall, my favorite is the 2010 - 2011 G55 AMG. Great interior quality, better tech than the early ones, terrific reliability, and great performance (some say its just as fast if not faster than a G63).
