Home after 11 weeks, doing the G inspections and notice some transmission fluid under the bellhousing. So I immediately question the fluid level, promptly "popping" off that cap on the dipstick tube...finding no dipstick. What's the consensus on the G500 auto tranny fluid check/dipstick? I'm assuming that I can just buy one and put it in. Mine's a MY 2000 Europa G500. Looks like I've got a lot of catching up to do! And I'm very glad to see PtePaul back online Garret Edited by G4Garret 6/19/2006 2:12 PM

Start motor, insert gently until the tip bottoms out, remove and read. Reads hot or cold. "W" for "Werkzeug". You can get one from anyone who sells MB tools. I got mine from FastLane, which now has a new name, for about $25. You also need to order a replacement security seal or three.

I've got a dipstick and bought some extra security seals... because the dipstick is only used to measure the fluid and has to come out to seal the opening (it doesn't go all the way in as Alan mentioned). I recently checked my fluid level and the observation i made is that there's almost no reason to replace the borken security seal with a new one unless you're afraid of someone tampering with your car. The cap performs all the same whether the break-away tab is present or not, so i see no reason not to re-use the cap without the "security" tab. I suppose there's some risk of vibration working it loose, but it seems very remote to me, you be the judge though... so do get a couple extra caps just in case like dutch said... they're cheap. If you're replacing your tranny fluid, there's a factory magnet you can buy that goes inside the pan to collect junk which doesn't come with our "sealed for life" transmissions either.

Ok, what I understand is the dipstick can't stay in the tube, but is only inserted for measurement. Seems strange. I suppose I can deal with that, I'll just find a way to store it under the hood, and buy spare caps. Is fluid seepage a normal occurance on these transmissions? Thanks for all of the help! Leakage can happen if the truck is left for long periods of time (months). As I understand it, fluid can slowly creep back from the torque converter into the main body of the transmission, raising the level there to much higher then normal. At this point some seals are exposed to pressures that they are not designed for, and seepage occurs. As a data point: my truck had seepage after being parked at the Federalizer for months. Once driven, the leak disappeared and has not returned.

Cleanlieness is godlieness in any auto box; but, especially, with this one. The dip stick is coiled wire; and I wouldn't want to stick one that had been stored under the hood and accumulated a bunch of trash inside the tranny.

It's surprisingly long, so you probably don't want to keep it in the truck. Like Dutch said, you want to keep it clean. It comes in a long plastic bag, and that's a good place to keep it. I never bothered to replace the little tab thingy, and the cap has not come off after several thousand miles of rattling over washboard in Mexico. Most everything else has fallen off though.
