Does anyone have any information regarding why this may or may not work/may or may not be straightforward. I have the 460 series with a manual box but would consider the auto box with the 300. Thanks.

Thanks. That would be a huge change. I talked to a friend about swapping my manual gearbox to an automatic one. I rejected this idea. The only way would be to have a automatic spender vehicle sitting around and then get all the needed parts. Also , if you have a normal passenger car engine you wont get the 300GE engine, since the characteristic is different. Possible, but a lot of time and money needed. RGDS Klaus

Why do you say the character is different? Do you mean its not the same engine (in terms of specs)? What would you recommend as an engine swop that would give me a substantial increase in horsepower and torque but would not eat up my transfer box, diffs, halfshafts.

Why do you say the character is different? Do you mean its not the same engine (in terms of specs)? What would you recommend as an engine swop that would give me a substantial increase in horsepower and torque but would not eat up my transfer box, diffs, halfshafts. The Engine is different in terms of Spec. If you compare the normal 300E to a 300GE you will see that the maximum torque at the 300GE is delivered at lower RPM'S than the 300E. As far as I know you'll need a different camshaft and a different ignition control unit to re spec. Also the water pump would be a different one since the 300E comes with electromagnetic fan control. You see the engines are similar but not equal. Still I think the 300GE is possible, but it take some effort to integrate it. I drive a 300GE in Wintertime with the manual Gearbox. It works and I have the impression that the 300GE still accelerates faster then my 320 automatic one. So to not double the work, use your manual gearbox. A friend converted his 300GE to a 300E 24V from a crashed old 300CE. He told me the car runs fine now, but he always need to turn it over 4000 U/min in order to get enough power. At this speed of engine the fuel consumption is much higher. RGDS Klaus

I see what you mean. Would the motor bolt on to the 5 speed manual box or would I need to have an adaptor plate made up?

Harald has an nice Gearbox overview.... http://4x4abc.com/G-Class/transmissions/getriebe.html As long as you have the starter on left side it should fit. RGDS Klaus

The Automatic will have a different ratio than the manual one. My 320 GE runs at 100km/h around 3200 U/m, the 300 GE at the same speed around 3000 U/min. I have not tested yet 4000U/min on the Autobahn in the last gear.

Hi Klaus, I had just changed the gear ratio to 5.28:1 in my 91 300GE automatic with 33" tires and the police radar sign showed 66 miles/hr @ 4500 rpm -sucking gas for sure.... Karl
