On my 5 speed they would routinely get old, break and prevent proper positioning of the shift linkage. It's a cheap repair.

If you got water inside of the transmission, it will warp and destroy the clutches. This will cause funny and/or hard shifting. If you have any red-milky fluid when you check it, change the fluid immediatly.

So you can probably ignore this last post.

Regards, Rick (Typo fixed.) On the side of the transmission, there are two or three flat shift levers. They are linked to the round shift rods that go to the linkage under the shift lever. The round rods connect to the flat shift levers on the side of the transmission through a hole in the end of each shift lever. Each hole has a rubber grommet in it to cushion the shift. Those grommets can break down with heat and oil exposure. When they do, the round shift rod can't move the shift lever to the exact position needed for a smooth shift. The shift rod has a locking clip on the end to keep it in place. Remove this locking clip and remove the rod. Press out the old grommet and press in a new one. Reinsert the shift rod and replace the locking clip. You'rre ready to roll. My 5 speed did this often enough at inconvenient places that I always carried a couple of spares in the glove box. Replacement can be done along side the road, although it's a whole lot nicer to do when things are not hot under there.

advance Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Shiftin Issue You should also check if theres water in your cluth housing (I think it's called that even with automatic transmission). Unscrew the drainplugg. Edited by advance 7/20/2006 3:09 PM (clutchhus.jpg) Attachments ---------------- clutchhus.jpg (63KB - 9 downloads)
