Replacing alternator on my 1984 w460.

My alternator isns't charging on my 300GD. Went to autozone and got an alternator for a 1984 300SD since this had the same 617A engine that I have, but the new alternator has a three prong spade plug where my old one has two terminals. From reading a bit, it seems like this is somewhat common, and eurotruck importers offers a terminal to plug kit. What I would rather do is go back and get the proper alternator with the two terminals. I can find pictures of these online, but can't seem to find a part number for the correct 55 amp alternator with the two prong setup.

Anyone know a part number for this, or know of a different model that has the correct set up?

If you want to PM your VIN, I'll look up what came on the truck from the factory.

RE: Replacing alternator on my 1984 w460.

Dutch,

Thanks for the response. The engine I have is not original to the vehicle. It originally had a non-turbo engine and was upgrade with a turbo of the same year. The pictures attached show the problem. The alternator with the plug receptical in the back is what I bought from the autoparts store, but what I need is the other one. This image came from fourbyfourclub.com and it is the 80 amp bosch unit replacement for a w460. Essentially, that is exactly what I need, but I don't have a part number, or know of a vehicle that that alternator came on, and without that, it near impossible for the guys at the parts shop to figure out if they have one. It is the alternator that came on m110 and om617 according to the product description from fourbyfourclub.com. If anyone has experience getting these from a parts store, I'd appreciate your input.

The alternator that came on my 1984 280GE (M110) was NLA P/N: A.005.154.80.02. It has been superseded by P/N: A.007.154.16.02, an 80 Amp alternator.

If the alternator is not charging, it is most likely the voltage regulator brushes simply need replacing, or just replace the regulator. A far simpler solution than what you're trying to do.

Re: Replacing alternator on my 1984 w460.

I agree with JR. Replace the voltage regulator. Part number should be on the black piece. This should resolve the problem 90% of the time. Looks like the pic.

If this does not solve it you can have your alternator rebuilt.

Additionally there are a few terminal based alternators available. do some googling.

If you buy off EBay contact to confirm it is the 2 pole version: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-Bosch-100-Amp-Alternator-300SD-500...

My experience with those bigger alternators is that they fit , but if you need to change a belt you must take alternator out , whats a pain. There a 65A , same size also used on sedans and you can uograde your alternator to something like 70 amp in the same body.

Re: Replacing alternator on my 1984 w460.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I took the old alternator to a shop and had it tested, and it was shot. I ended up purchasing the alternator for the same year 300SD, the only difference between that and mine was the terminals vs. the plug. I found the plug on eBay and rewired my alternator connection with the plug. It's working great. I have a dash mount voltage meter and it shows that it charges just over 14 volts essentially any time the engine is above idle and about 13 volts at idle.

Re: Replacing alternator on my 1984 w460.

Resurfacing this old thread...
1984 280GE 46021217035145

My old alternator was a AL117X, had to replace it due to ball bearings heavy, belt slipping and cutting them.

I got a new AL117X, that connects like the old one with the plug. Now, charging voltage is 14+ at 2000rpms, but the alternator dash warning light came on after a short drive and is still on if running.

Tested ground and positive to battery and all looks fine. My only suspicion is the purple cable that I think goes to the dash, but I do not have a good diagram. Should I test this (purple) terminal for a certain reading to discard an internal issue with the new alternator? I did order an new plug just in case.

Also, my old alternator had a ground to the block, that seems redundant... Was this OEM? Even though it is bolted?

If someone has a good diagram to share, it would be greatly appreciated.

Any recommendations on how to proceed to figure out the dash light?
