These are the last two items on my punch-list for the 4 year/ 50,000 mile Service. Please note, these are for the 2004 G55. Check your EPC/WIS for any variations. After recently doing fuel filter/hose changes on W202, W210, W140, and W460, the filter on the W463 was a pain in the cuttucous. The AFT Two hoses of the filter were really REALLY stuck on, even after 50K miles. It took a good 30 minutes of prying, pulling, and Multiple Tourette's Syndrome Outbursts to get the stupid hoses off. I'm probably asking for trouble, but I put a TRACE coat of Hylomar Blue on the rear 2 pipes of the filter, to make it easier, next time. Even with this, the lines were quite "Snug" getting back on. The filter and loaction are the same on my 2000 G500, but it has screw clamps instead of CLIC Clamps.

On the forward section, Worm AND CLIC. I know nothing of engineering, but I wonder the logic of something like that.

But if you want to show it that way, and if others feel a need to do this, then in addition to the words about "already filtered fuel" I'd give the guidance to pour the fuel from the end that the flow arrow points TOWARD on the old filter, into the end that the flow arrow originates FROM on the new filter. It would also help to make people aware of the direction requirement on the filter. It doesn't look from the pictures alone like there's anything to prevent one from installing the filter backwards other than the arrow on the can. That's a little strange for MB to not error proof something like that. But my own two cents is that all that fiddling around with fuel doesn't have enough practical value to offset the risk of doing something wrong. All of the above is only my own opinion. -Dave G.

Yes good points. I think I mentioned "already filtered", but to re-enforce the point... And yes, it is not the clearest, but you can see the arrow direction on the OLD filter, and from what end I am draining from. To answer your point about "idiot-proofing' the filter. There actually IS a slight built-in safety feature to prevent the inadvertant backwards install. In the pic showing the filter "priming", I am placing the EXIT fitting of the OLD filter against the ENTRANCE fitting of the NEW filter. You can see the size discrepency. With the REAR central tube being such a tight fit, I would think it IMPOSSIBLE to hook the smaller CENTRAL FORWARD/EXIT rubber tubing onto the LARGE REAR ENTRANCE fitting of the Filter.

Would a Bosch fuel filter be ok? an online parts store directed me to it. It "looks" the same... Or should i stick with Mahle? If so, where did you get it? On a side note, I've just ordered parts from Duval in FL, the prices seems to be the same even though what's his face left.

I have been getting a fair number of items from http://www.autohausaz.com/ Their prices are good, and free UPS shipping with orders > $50. No sales tax for me. They are the same OEM Supplier Part Numbers..... just without the MB part number as well. I don't know enough about the Bosch filters. I tend to stick with OEM stuff,,,,, but that's just conservative me.

03bart Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Photo DIY- Fuel Filter Replacemnt, G55 I just did mine on my 2003 G500. Indeed, there was a mixture of clamps--3 CLIC and 1 almost-CLIC that had some kind of central ridge that prevented my newly-puchased CLIC tool from working on it. The first 3 came off in 5 minutes and I spent the next half hour trying to get the fourth one off. Finally got it off, but I don't know why 1 clamp would be different from the rest. Frustrating. ps thanks for the guide! b

Posts: 59 | Re: Photo DIY- Fuel Filter Replacemnt, G55 Excellent post... I just ordered the Mahle KL82 fuel filter on Amazon for $27.40 shipped. I did have a question as to an alternative to the 4 fuel hose clamps required in the first pic? I can't seem to find them and although I've done a fuel filter change on a Land Rover, I don't remember pinching fuel lines. Thanks!

Posts: 59 | Re: Photo DIY- Fuel Filter Replacemnt, G55 After reading my original post, I should have said 'alternative part number' for the hose clamps you have pictured... I wasn't insinuating a workaround. My mistake / mis-type. I looked up 116-20 which is the number I read, without recognizing the logo but found nothing. And the fuel hose/line clamps I found on Amazon don't look like they'd work. Thanks again.

Always use clean fresh fuel from a clean container. You are changing a 4 year old filter because : 1 it could be restricted 2 it no longer filters reliably Don't chance it Bob
