Not to re-hash an old topic of "change or don't change", but this post is just meant for those who DO believe in changing the fluid. My target has always been 40,000 mile intervals. I AM IN NO WAY PROMOTING GOING AGAINST WHAT IS IN YOUR OWNERS' MANUAL. YOU DO WHATEVER THE SPIRIT LEADS YOU. YOU MUST CONSIDER THE POSSIBLE REPERCUSSIONS SUCH AS WARRANTY VOID, ETC. ONE NOTABLE THING ABOUT THIS PROCEDURE IS THE STRICT ADHERENCE TO "SURGICAL-LIKE" CLEANLINESS AT ALL STEPS, AND METICULOUS CARE TO NOT OVER OR UNDER-FILL THE TRANSMISSION. APPARENTLY, THESE BOXES ARE VERY SENSITIVE TO ANY DEGREE OF CONTAMINATION OR IMBALANCED FLUID LEVELS. IF YOU OVERFILL, YOU NEED TO SIPHON OUT EXCESS. I opted for the "new" type fluid, designed for the new 7-Speed boxes. I had a long discussion with one of the engineers at MotherShip Montvale, who confirmed that the use of the "New" fluid- A.001.989.45.03.10 (which is also only 1/2 the cost of the "old" fluid A.001.989.21.03.10) IS ALLOWED!! The usual CYA blah, blah stuff. I am not claiming any expertise. I make no bones about it, I am a novice mechanic. My projects are based on my interpretation of the WIS procedures, and/or outside sources. Do work at your own discretion. CaptnPete Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: PHOTO DIY- 722.6x TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE I have been told by some very knowledgeable people, that one of the reasons MB decided to make the fluid non-changeable was for the exact reason that they were concerned of the requirements of absolute cleanliness in the procedure. Not too many shops can be relied upon to use such a careful approach.

The photos help a lot in making it easier to see and understand than it was with my words only procedure published a couple of years ago. One point. Many of the transmissions did not have the magnet. Get one and put it in there, if yours doesn't have one.

Does that little red button on the little torque wrench pop up when you get to the proper torque? Also always a good idea to wear something like nitrile exam gloves on these jobs. I never bothered until I started working in medical device manufacturing where I can't go onto the manufacturing floor with hands that look like I maybe changed a diesel starter last night. But after starting to wear them, I keep a generous supply on hand now. MAN do they save on the clean-up time, not to mention keeping the icky stuff out of your system....I don't remember where I saw it but some doctor or other talking about what we absorb through our skin ended with the idea, "if you wouldn't eat it, don't put it on your skin." Me, I just like the easy clean-up. Beautiful write-up, BTW. -Dave G.

Yes, I am intimately schooled in the effects of petrochemicals on the human "machine". If you notice, anytime I am in contact with the oil, I DO have gloves on. Yes, the Torque wrenches have Audible, Tactile, and Visual (the red button popping up) indications of endpoint. And the "will" deal???? Hmmmm, I think you'll have to arm-wrestle my boys for the ill-gotten booty. Cheers!

It sure does make cleanup easier and yeah cancer isn't fun either. We never heard the end of it from other mechanics in the neighborhood though, what a bunch of sissies we were.... The guys next door used to wash their hands in the parts washer before going to lunch! One of them died at like 55 from kidney failure....wonder why? Jonathan

A: The young mechanic ALWAYS washes his hands after going to the bathroom. The old mechanic always washes his hands BEFORE going to the bathroom. -Dave G.

You just have to look. Also, your profile does not show what year your trucks are. And, Yes! I Always change the Electrical Plug, with each Transmission Service.

Doing this every 30,000 miles? I've had zero problems.
