Lovely!

These guys are my favorites, mostly because of the completly wooden nature of the dashboard! mmmmm wood.
That, and I imagine that they are still fairly drivable in modern traffic. Ideally it would be the tiny little 190d of the
same vintage, but those are simply unusable today, unless you live in a very unpopulated area.

I saw one of these for sale for $3,600.00 in the local paper, but was afraid of the condition it would have been in for
that low a price! It said good condition, but is good condition on collector goods not one step above trash?

A vintage comic in 'good' condition is worthless unless it is like, X-Men #1 or some such rare thing.

I digress... this is a '59 220s, *GORGEOUS* creature!

Today it's all plastic and carbon-fiber! On some of the pontons they used a substance called "bakelite" which got very hard and brittle with age. I'm not sure what kind of material it was, but we had a dash trim made of it and had to replace it with a new panel fashioned with lucite.

bakelite is the original plastic. very popular with collectors in the form of handbags, jewelry and trinkets(usually womans goods) and is pretty expensive for what you get, if you ask me.

the thing is that it has a beautiful creamy ivory color(for most automotive applications, at least), just a certain look to it that cannot easily be duplicated in modern plastic, i guess you'd call it patina.

The early vws seem to use it on dashes as well, but you know how that market is-- you can get anything for them pretty much, you can just build an entire car if you have 1/3 of the body and the major chassis components remaining.

I'd imagine that it wouldnt ruin the character or value of a ponton too much(upon looking better, seems sedan examples are actually fairly inexpensive for what you get-- id rather pay 15k for one of those in good shape than a new kia, for example) if you just had the various knobs or trims cast in pot metal or fashioned out of matching woods?

That's a good point, Neon... since Bakelite is hard to come by, and wood is so very easily fashioned.

I'll remember that for when my Ponton comes in

A very big hi to you all. This is my 300 SEL 6.3 that I have just sold. The new owner collects the car next Saturday and has promised to take very good care of her.

Ohhh why

why?

WHY?!?

Its so... American engineered with weak hinges and heavy doors. But hey-- if you had a 6.3, you aren't afraid of high fuel consumption=)

Does anyone have photos of the old wagons? I think that there were a few custom bodied by Binz. Many were ambulances and service vehicles.

Now here's a real classic. I saw this one at the top of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road in the Austrian Alps last Fall. The driver said he purchased it from an owner in San Diego and had it shipped back "home". I guess what goes around, does indeed come around.

 My W115 300D. Daily Driver. 1976. Okay, not a classic like any of these, but she's thirty and I can drive her everyday without any issue.

No garage queens for me! These car were built to be DRIVEN!
