 | Sounds bad... sharp rapping sound from 280GE engine

I stopped the 1982 280GE LWB RHD g wagon to pick up some tyres, and when I started it, it made an immediate loud, sharp engine rapping sound. See https://youtube.com/shorts/caEsoHTJB2I for a quick video. I checked the oil and it was low, but not out. The guy at the house where I was visiting had some 5-40 synthentic oil which I used to top up the basic mineral oil, but it made no difference.  Thankfully, it is in a safe leafy suburb and I was able to move it ten metres in idle to park on the correct side of the road. I have a spare, dead 280 motor at home, so if it is something simple like lifters, I may have used parts.  But first, I am hoping someone can listen to the video and say "yup... it's probably a broken...[    ]". Hopefulyl it is something I can fix on the side of the road, because it otherwise is a tow back to my island which promises to be expensive, especially if the advice says "don't start it" to get it on and off the ferry."  Appreciate the help.  |

connection rod bearing on the crank.
Take the spark plugs out, reach in with a rod and turn the crank by hand. At each piston wait till it is pulled down. Then push the piston with the rod - if you can push it a bit .. feel play: Then its the bearing shell gone
