Modification required for safe fitment Changing out a battery in the pre-MBUSA 463 (battery compartment in the back left of the vehicle) should be straight forward, but there is an issue: - Remove all jewelery to include neck chains - Disconnect negative lead first - Disconnect positive lead next - Remove small electronics box - Remove hold down - Remove old battery (place a rag on top of the positive terminal to prevent an accidental short) - Clean terminals. Remove all coatings, petroleum jelly and wire brush the contact surface - ***Modify battery's hold down structure on side opposite the battery terminals *** - Install battery - Install hold down - Install small electronics box - Connect positive terminal - Connect negative terminal ***The Odyssey case design causes a hold down problem which can be a safety issue. You need to do a small simple modification, otherwise the battery can move upwards on the opposite side of the removable hold down. If the battery breaks free (accident, off road driving, etc), and both terminals make contact with the compartment cover, then things can go badly quickly. Here are the pictures. Modification required for safe fitment Thanks J.R. For the write up. I used a sharp knife to whittle off those offending plastic tabs on the back base. If not removed, the battery is held down by the front clamp and little friction at the back, holding it, but not totally securing it in place. FWIW The Diehard Platinum AGM 34 is not offered in 34R as of yet but is identical to the odyssey pc1500 34 for a few bucks less and often on sale. It would also need the hold down tabs trimmed on the back side and your positive and negative cables elongated about 6" to reach the standard configured posts on the 34. This may be a good option if your cables are in bad shape. | ||
