'03 CD based? Should be color regardless, if I recall correctly.

I have the 2006.1 disk (DVD) in my '03 ML320 and output is in color. Could be your older disk. Not sure what Benz charges these days for a new disk but the 2007 disk is out now and you can get it directly from NAVTEQ for $199.00. Go to navteq.com
