DIY Windshield gasket sealent

Caution this post is for entertainment only. Do not try this at home unless you take responsibility for your own work. Nor will I be responsible for lack of entertainment value.

On a flat windshield one of the rust promoting conditions, that is not noticed until damage has occurred, is water getting under the windshield gasket. When you do find a telltale rust bubble forcing the gasket up, it is in an advanced stage that makes for expensive & extensive repairs.
Due to that condition which had developed on a 1989 Montero I owned, I wanted to check my G after washing it.
I was upset to find out I had water under the windshield gasket. I checked for this after hand washing & found it was always the same. Water at the base of the windshield on both sides. (Never found any inside the cabin)

RE: Photo DIY Windshield gasket sealent

My truck is a 2006 with no damage to the gasket and the fit seemed to be snug all around.
Searching on this forum I found this reference to a fix.
http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=7650&pos...

I purchased 1 tube of 3M Automotive Bedding & Glazing Compound. Black. Part No. 08509 (Thanks Dai!) from my local auto paint store.
http://products3.3m.com/catalog/us/en001/government/innovative_solu...

This product is made for filling the voids between the gasket & frame and cleanup is with a dry rag. (More on this later!)

RE: Photo DIY Windshield gasket sealent

I dried the area with forced air under the gasket while it was pried open with plastic shims.
The one tool that helped with moving the gasket lip is a MB interior tool that is sold by one of the G parts vendors. I also used this tool a lot when installing the Brake Controller wiring. (A future DIY post)

RE: Photo DIY Windshield gasket sealent

I would advise doing this with a helper as it is a bit awkward at times getting the calk tube nozzle to follow the gasket. I did it alone so it is possible but harder.
I cut the nozzle and marked the side of the cartridge so that I would know where the nozzle angle was while using the caulk gun. I had to re-cut the nozzle for a larger opening due to the thickness of the glazing compound after I started. It is quite hard to pump with a std caulk gun.

Apply enough of the glazing compound to be assured that the voids are filled. That will give you oozing black sticky stuff coming out all around the gasket. Pay attention to what you touch, where you place your hands, what you lean up against, etc because no matter how careful you are you will be plagued with spots of this stuff starting to show up every where.
This is also about the time you will be come acquainted with what it takes to “remove with a dry rag” After finishing pumping the whole tube completely around the entire windshield I thought that this should be easier to clean up than boat caulk and you do not have a cure time to worry about.

RE: Photo DIY Windshield gasket sealent

Well after finding that the darn stuff just about would not come off my hands with a dry cloth nor with a cloth soaked in alcohol. I set out to wipe the gasket & paint down. I scraped the excess off with scrap plastic credit card material. Then started to wipe off what was left. Same results, very difficult to remove & stuck to the gasket like semi-hardened glue.
Trying to figure out what to use other than a harsh solvent was difficult but I finally remembered what I had used successfully, removing old weather-stripping adhesive off the aluminum door, on my old Airstream when replacing the rotten door gaskets. It is safe & not harsh on materials. I had managed to find it in the local Ace hardware store.
I had some left and this worked great.

RE: Photo DIY Windshield gasket sealent

In 30 minutes I had it completely cleaned up by just placing a small amount on a small cut up rag and wiping the surface. I found it was all that was needed to be able to clean and smooth the gasket down with a slightly dampened rag, turning & replacing with a new rag when needed. (Have lots of cut up rags available. They work better than paper towels)

Re: Photo DIY Windshield gasket sealent

FYI There was no indication that the gasket was retaining water under it. It was just one thing on my list of things to check and I'm glad I did.

Makes me want to wedge a few black plastic shims in the lower edge to allow water run off till I get around to it.

I was wondering where I would find some shims and your comment reminded me that I have a boat load from installing a cork floating floor in the kitchen. I believe the windshield installer did use some sealant, but I'm not sure how much. I have a much advanced problem with the windshield frame in the 280 ...

RE: Photo DIY Windshield gasket sealent

Water doesn't collect under my gasket, I have these wonderful holes that allow it to drain out, onto my feet which is a pleasant cooling sensation when it's hot outside!

Re: Photo DIY Windshield gasket sealent

Link for De solv it. This stuff worked on 50 year old gasket adhesive on a Airstream door that acetone/paint remover/etc would not soften or remove from the aluminum.

Drew, my shims were from a flooring project too. Work good as they do not scratch the paint!

Re: Photo DIY Windshield gasket sealent

Consider also sealing between the glass and gasket.

Nice write up.

Re: Photo DIY Windshield gasket sealent

Could one just seal the top and sides allowing the bottom for drainage or is the bottom also the problem?

Re: Photo DIY Windshield gasket sealent

BlueG,
The water collects in the bottom trough and sits there due to the angle of the metal. That’s where the rust will start. I had no idea there was water under the gasket until, a few days after washing it, I pried up the gasket in a bottom corner just out of curiosity. (I wanted to check this because I knew that area had been a known rust spot)
I was surprised at the amount that came out.
I do believe that it was the upper corners that were not totally sealing perfectly around the curve but you could not tell that by their appearance.
In fact the whole gasket looked flawless and in good contact with the paint.
I did it to seal AND fill all the voids under the gasket!

Thanks for the kind words otiswesty

Mine is holding some H2O also. Is this just the design? I'm wondering if it really is a problem.
