450 SEL Wheels

Hello, I have a 1980 450 SEL. I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this year and model, but I'm curious about upgrading the wheel and tire package on my car. I'm working on restoring back to as close to new as possible before selling it.
It has 150K original miles on it. Overall it's in Excellent condition - based on the local dealer's assessment. I'd like to upgrade a few things on it (wheels, performance parts and just generally replacing worn parts).

If anyone has some suggestions on some decent wheels that will fit (16" or larger), please let me know. I'm not looking to pimp it, just give it a little more muscle. I like the AMG monoblocks, and some of the Replica wheels with a more updated styling than the original 14" cake-pan style.

Thanks
Bob

RE: 450 SEL Wheels

Greetings--your car looks awesome and I also see that you found the 116 forum.

Boneheaddoctor, Nomad, and Nutz on this site (among others) have done just what you're talking about, so ask in that forum. They're here off and on and I'm sure would be more than happy to help. Where are you located?

RE: 450 SEL Wheels

You may find it interesting to learn that your current wheels are forged.

Mercedes went to cast wheels in the mid 1980s and any aftermarket wheel you find will also be cast, i.e. a less expensive production process and not really the quality of what you have now.

Your wheels were $400 each in 1980 dollars.

IMHO any wheel you put on this car will look silly compared to the OE wheels.  Kind of like a 60-year-old in a Speedo or a bikini as the case may be.

A good refinishing of your current wheels isn't a bad idea.

Re: 450 SEL Wheels

Thanks gentlemen. I appreciate the info and your opinions. Chris, I'm being very careful wth what I put on this car. I'm considering replacing the OE wheels with 16", chrome, 92' style wheels as well as looking for some aftermarket stuff too. There isn't a whole lot out there anyway. The AMG Monoblocks look fantastic on this car too, but they're also hard to come by....the replicas don't look quite right and it's hard to find ones that fit this model. I'm keeping the OE wheels so when I sell the car it'll have them.

I'm in Washington state BTW. Thanks for the comments. I'll post more pics as soon as I take more.
