Drew, from the photo (on this message number that I am replying to) it looks like your distributor has two vacuum lines going to it, while mine has the one. You show that yellow line going back to distributor...like on the bottom ? Yours being older, probably has vac ports for both retarding and advancing distributor for various conditions. Interesting, I did not catch that bit as I was troubleshooting mine. Hipine, for curiousity, did your dizzy have two vac ports ?

Mike

P.S. Karl, my G is doing fine, keeping it inside the garage away from all that California smoke.

Mike

Yes it does - yellow line goes from the inboard side to the lower part of the intake manifold and the red from the outboard side to the upper part ... I still don't have any of that resolved other than the idle is set where its not too high with the A/C off and not too low with the A/C on. Will have to do more research on that point soon ...

RE: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

To add a little bit of info to this thread for those that use the 'search" function to find solutions, here is a photo of the a/c idle adjustment valve, idle hose pipes, and vac lines....from a 1985 W460.

It works like a charm, activate a/c, idle kicks up a bit to maintain idle as before compressor was engaged....nice, especially at stoplights.

Mike

RE: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

Hello,

I'm new here, even if I've been reading since some time. I'm from Northern Italy and have a nice 280 GE (1985) since a couple of years.

I need to dig up this old thread, as I'm having a problem when the A/C is on: when decelerating and engaging the clutch, my idle goes very low (sometimes motor dies).

So I'm wondering if some components or the routing of some vac lines are not correct in my car.

The main difference with the routing of DesertStar shown above is that in my case it seems that the electric switch valves allows the vac to reach and therefor trigger the "decel circulating air valve".
So while the solution of DesertStar will be a continuous by-pass (a small one), the solution on my car can only be temporary, because ones the "decel circulating air valve" is open, the vac on the small lines should collapse and slowly close the "decel circulating air valve" again.

This is the way it looks:
]

This should be the original setup without A/C:
]

Does my setup make any sense? What does the switch actually? Switch from 1 -> 2 to 3 -> 2?

]

Thanks,

Peter

RE: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

From looking closer into the problem I found an interesting schema:

]

This is actually how it looks in my car (with red corrections).

So it is not about triggering the "decel circulating air valve" (n° 11 above) but actually to open the A/C idle valve (n° 14 above) with vacuum, which is connecting:

]

On the image from DesertStar I don't see how he is getting the vacuum to open the A/C idle valve, as he is connecting on the inlet side (before throttle body)?

Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Peter

Re: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

Hi Peter, I am trying to figure this out as well and pulling my intake apart this week.
My 280GE is a 1983 serial 027585.
It came from UAE and is stock, but AC has been added, so I will try to figure out what is going on under the hood and behind the dash. Maybe I can help with some answers soon.

RE: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

Yikes, it has been 12 years since I posted this.  Thanks for causing me to "relearn" this again.  I have posted some photos which may help understand connections.  I am not certain my vacuum source connection is "by the book" but it seems to work and function for me without any problems for many years.  From the photos that Bram posted, it seems that the vacuum source is the same as I showed...with lines going to Fuel Regulator and Warmup Regulator.

 Peter, I looked at your photo and mocked it up a bit...not sure if I did it right, but it seems like it would then be connected similarly to mine and Brams as you can compare with the other photos in this thread.

Hope this helps.

Re: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

Hello, thanks for looking into this again! I think I've sorted it out mostly, probably had the piping inverted on the electrical switch. I will need to verify next summer (very cold now here and no need for AC now ;-)).

Ciao,

Peter

Re: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

Wow, thanks for that info and photos Mike. I just got the last of my new rubber vacuum lines at the beginning of the week. I do have AC and it would be good to set up the electronically controlled valve as well, which had not been in my initial plan.

The WUR vacuum connections differ based on the part number on the body of the unit. Once I get mine out in the new year, I'll know how best to get it hooked back up and check pressures to see if it is working. G-AMG's tutorial on it is very helpful. Actually Mercedes offers remanufactured WUR units cheaper than the aftermarket rebuilders, so that is a good option. I am planning to buy a MB rebuilt "air slide" for good measure as it controls idle air bypass both cold and hot. I would really like to take that bit out of the equation. A000141062581 Also cheaper from MB than having one rebuilt.

My radiator just started leaking also, so I guess I'll take care of that at the same time... It could be a busy winter.

Re: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

It looks like the decel valve does not mount to any kind of bracket and is just suspended in its attachment to the attached hoses above the power steering bracket and crankcase ventilation line. Is that true?

Here is where I'm at with new original 1983 hoses and most of the additional hoses I would need to set up the decel valve.

Sorry if I'm playing a bit of catch up here.

Re: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

Hello,

I'm quite sure that also the Decel Valve is fixed somewhere, but I don't have the car here at the moment to take a pic (again, mine is a MY85).
Also the piping in the last picture seems a bit strage to me, there seem to be wrong parts with not enough connections.
For the piping of a car WITHOUT AC the picture of Bram is very good:
https://ibb.co/KF5MYkN

For the system with AC, if you want the correction of idle speed, you need the specific piping.

Ciao,

Peter

Re: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

Yes sorry about that. The piping I have set up right now in the picture on my previous post is for the original early 280G. No decel valve and no AC.

When I ordered the pipes, I ordered everything that came up as model specific for my VIN in EPC. Thus I had the 3 extra tubes, 2 small and 1 larger that are for using the decel valve. Hans Hehl also has pics of the mounting bracket for the decel valve, so I answer my own question.

3 versions of the vacuum pipes under the intake manifold:

1) Simple early 1980s with no decel valve and no AC

2) mid and late 1980s with additional port in vacuum pipes for decel valve with additional smaller tubing as well.

3) Mid/late 1980s version with decel valve and AC. These vacuum pipes have yet one more air bypass port on the vacuum pipes that is described in the posts above. The pics from Hans Hehl attached below show the extra AC port with the red arrow

Hope I did not cause confusion, I am just trying to learn all this myself.
I decided to put mine back together like stock for 1983 model.

Hello,

I think on the picture there should be also a hole in the other pipe.

Yes, they are the same pipe. One for using AC, one for non AC. Trying to illustrate the difference.

Re: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

I've been trying to find the AC air bypass valve in EPC with little success. I searched today under the 110.994 engine and found this valve. It seems to look like the image from above which I reposted here as well.
The part number is A0000941265

Eric, the decel valve mounts to a bracket on the upper oil pipe tat goes to top of oil canister....see photo.

 The idle valve is found in the Electrical section 15 in the Engine category of a/c equipped G with SA code 12300

Have fun with your puzzle.

 Edit: I will email you photos.....becoming PIA to post from Ipad

Thanks for the photo, the bracket attached to the upper oil pipe is easier to see from this view

Re: 280GE M110 A/C High Idle proper function

I'm finally getting my intake side back together. My system is set up like Drew's. The 2 vacuum lines off the distributor stumped me today as my pics from dissasembly didn't show routing. This pic from EPC shows the vac line from the distributor advance can going to the throttle port and the vac line off the back of the distributor going to the rearward vac tube posterior to the "slide" or Aux air valve
