I took delivery of my wife's new ML Friday.
What honey it is......I love the purrrr of the Diesel.
I installed the Radar detector today after she insisted I get it in before her trip Tuesday.
Installing the detector was a piece of cake.
I dropped both plastics under the dash, opened the right engine fuse box.
Looking at the console, I found a clear path throught the console from the drivers side to the passengers side and I put a fish tape throught it to pull the wire with.
Found a hole in the firewall under the right side air intake, pushed the two conductor wire into the cabin and had it wired in about 3/4 hour.
Finding a good solid ground was not easy, so I spliced into the wire mass beside the engine fuse box.
The nut on the ground was not too accessable.
Of course I had to go and drop a short wire into the engine compartment. It went to the bottom out of reach.
I dropped the plastic under engine pans and decided to leave them off for now. I never really liked those noise dampners on any of my Mbenz's.

Be very careful about that. That engine runs very hot; and without the proper ventilation paths (and that pan cover could be part of it), you could run into overheating trouble.

As an example, there are reports of folks removing the top engine shroud, only to end up scorching the paint on their hood. Personally, I wouldn't remove any of the cowlings around the engine; but, obviously, it's your truck to do with.

And whatever you do, do NOT even think about fooling with the fuel delivery system. It runs at 1300 bar; and the slightest leak can produce a hydraulic knife that will take your fingers off very cleanly in a heartbeat.

The same caution is true for the very high voltage on the glow plugs.

This ain't your good old typical MB diesel!

I read the post about removing the above engine cover and I will heed that.
I have no intention to be messing around with the fuel system.
The mention of High voltage on the glow plugs is news to me.
I had given the glo plugs some thought, but had not investigated them as I had not been into the engine compartment other than to install the supply wiring for the detector.
I'll learn more after I have more time.

I'd second that and add that this is flirting with jeopardizing the warranty.  

My radar detector installation is even more simple--I've got the battery-powered Escort which works just fine.
