| Rotex Gold Brake Pads
I have always been extremely unhappy with the amount of dust created by the MB OEM brake pads on my ML320CDI.
Even though there was still plenty of wear left at 37,500 miles, I changed the front pads on my ML320CDI last week to the Rotex Gold. I've had them on my G500 for over a year and have been very pleased with the brand. I just got back from a run to FL on business, so they now have about 1200 miles on them. I had cleaned and polished the wheels after the installation.
They are dead quiet - no squeals, and seem to have better braking than the originals. Most important there is no dust on the fronts, although the rears are already starting to get dirty; and the fronts with the original pads were always 3-4X more dirty than the rears. Now, I wish that Rotex would make the rears available.
If you're in the USA and you do decide to go with the Rotex Gold, let me point you to a good vendor, as there is one out there who is a major crook. Also, if you're going to do the job yourself, get a 9mm hex bit to remove the caliper bolts. That bit is just about impossible to find. |

| Clean Wheels That Will Now STAY Clean !!
Finally, the rear brake pads for my ML320CDI became available from Rotex Gold; and I installed them today. Now all four wheels will stay clean, instead of just the fronts, which were installed with Rotex Gold about 6 weeks ago; and have only a very light (almost invisible) coating of dust after all that time.
As we all know all too well, with the MB brake pads, all four wheels would get dirty very quickly; but the fronts were always about 10X worse than the rears. After doing the fronts last month, they stayed clean, but the rears got really nasty, as usual. Now, everybody gets to stay clean; and the pads are nice and quiet with braking efficiency just as good as the OEM MB pads.
If you want a good source, let me know; and I'll also advise you of who to stay clear of. |

This has been a recent trend regarding brakes on German vehicles. Many of the smaller vehicles require a 7 mm hex bit, another seldom-seen size. The rears on the ML are 7 mm; and the lower one is so tight that you'll only be able to use a hex-key, There's no room for a bit on a ratchet. I vice-gripped the bit, since I didn't have a hex-key. No way to properly torque (25 Nm) it then, either. |

I think you'll find that those bits - both the 9 mm on the front and the 7 mm on the rear - will not fit into the lower bolts on the calipers. There's only enough clearance for a hex key; or you can grab the bit with a vice grip to turn it. No room for the ratchet handle. |

Good point. Guess I will find out soon, as my front pads are down to 10%. |
