The statement that concerns me is this: G 500 required relocation of transmission oil cooler from front bumper to skid plate. Has anyone done this and how hard is it? Is the cooler still protected? Does it get good air flow? There are probably other issues I haven't thought about so I appreciate any other cautions and considerations. Thanks, W4WY PS. Happy New Year!

Someone here has moved it, and there were photos. Apparently, the G55 tranny cooler is in/on the skid plate from the factory; so it must be an acceptable alternative.

You will need to buy two brackets that mount in the same place as the rear bolts for the skid plate. I don't have part numbers to hand, but if you look on the EPC at a G55 you will find them. The G55 has the tranny cooler here by default (it has an intercooler in the bumper). As far as I remember, you don't even need to disconnect the hoses - although you will need to loosen one banjo fitting and re-orientate the 90-degree coupling so it points the right way. Even if you disconnect, not much fluid comes out. I was also concerned about the air-flow in that location, but I made some temperature measurements with a datalogger and decided it was OK. Plus, the Mercedes engineers must have done some thermal calculations before doing it for the G55. The cooler is completely protected in that spot, because it is above the skid plate. In fact it's better, you don't get any small stones dinging the fins, and if you have a "bump" that damages the front bumper, you won't lose the transmission fluid. The tow-pin bumper is a good idea. Having a permanent winch places additional strain on the stock springs. If you can figure out a way to use it on the rear as well that would be a big advantage. No other issues I can think of - you'll find this is very straightforward. The first photo shows the cooler in the new position, with the skid plate removed so you can see. The second photo shows the ORC winch bumper (with a tranny cooler in it) and a second tranny cooler mounted as discussed here (why have one cooler if you can have two?) UPDATE: I just found some photos of the brackets, plus some bits that are needed for mounting. As Richard said relocation is strait forward, no special skills or tools required. This is new generation tow bumper with ventilation slots on a bottom designed to work with transmission cooler on a skid plate. More questions? I sorta wish i'd bought the hoses that go with location, but the original hoses do work. Put a couple minutes into staring at them and making sure they're out of harms way because they're a little long for the job. It's a much sturdier bumper... i'd switch it in just for the extra strength in an accidental fender bender. I put it on after someone ran a red light and i popped their rear quarter panel.

Thanks for all the helpful input. W4WY I have to straighten the G500 bumper as some person backed into it years ago. I'm not sure what part is pushed back on the drivers side, but I might as well look into a tow pin bumper. I guess the only other choice is to modify the existing bumper ...

MARKO G Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Tow pin bumper on G-500 Hi, I am doing the same on my G500 and I buy all the needed pieces from the MB reseller near my home. I have a problem and I hope you will be able to help me. The bracket code A 463 504 35 40 in my hand is not Painted! It comes packaged and unpainted from the MB warehouse. Is this normal in your opinion? Does anyone had the same experience? Thanks. Marco EDIT: Photo removed to be resized.

Good luck. Burch PS. Several online companies have made kits to help with the installation if the oval fog lights need to be modified to fit. Karl and others have since produced the conversion plates so you don't have to make them like I did. Edited by gbenzer 1/22/2014 1:42 PM

Any one know that part number? EPC shows N009021005205 which doesn't seem to work.
