Re: December Special - Odyssey Battery PC1700T

For future reference, you can use 2 x Odyssey batteries such as pc1700, pc1500 or pc 1200 ( as main batteries )WITH pc 925 or pc 680 (as back up). Connected either manually through a marine type key switch or a VSR or both (I use both). PC 680 can easily start a 280 or 300 petrol engine.
You seperate them when you are about to do an extreme activity (i.e winching or camping overnight). In the unfortunate event of your main battery losing its charge, you have the small battery as back up.
This is a good solution if you are low on budget or have limited space in the battery compartment.
I use PC1700 and PC 925 , also PC1500 with PC680.

Dutch are you using this particular battery or you just recall how the conventional battery is mounted?

I'm using an Optima, which mounts the same as the conventional battery.

Re: December Special - Odyssey Battery PC1700T

The 1999 tray is 295mm long and the 1700 is 330mm, so it will not fit in the space either. The 1992 tray is based mounted also, but it is long enough, in the LHD version, to accomodate the battery

Re: December Special - Odyssey Battery PC1700T

I would agree that Dry battery is suitable since most recent Gs have batteries in the cabin. Also, when you roll over, wet battery creates lots of mess.
When I rolled my G, I had a Moll battery and it leaked and it was such a mess...
But I wonder if the Odyssey is up to the task of G. Stock battery is 100 ah rated. Especially those who use winch and other accessories would want to have something stronger.
Just my 2 yen.

A bit late maybe but--- yes, my 1990 300GD has the bottom mount to hold the battery in and it is in the usual spot under the hood.

The bottom clamp on my 280GE works just fine with the odyssey battery.

G-wagenaccessories - 12/2/2009 3:24 PM

Dear autonovice,

the MSRP price of the Odyssey PC1700T has been set at $380.88 and the unbelievable December Special from G-wagenaccessories.com is only priced at $250.00 plus S&H (CA Sales Tax 9.75%)......

To offer a package deal, we would have to raise that special price......

We are able to offer an installation kit to any novice, it would consist of pre-warmed work gloves, an all-around-vision pair of safety glasses, the needed spacer v.1.2.1, the rubber pole protector and the 38 page installation manual (sorry no hard-bound edition) - all this would certainly help the faint-heart-ed
confidently to complete a changeover to the Odyssey PC1700T battery.

We have included some preliminary pictures of such an installation kit - actual install kit might be shipped out differently

Too funny Karl. Nice price and product.

For the 460 engine compartment mount, I don't remember there being a flange on the bottom of the 1700 for the hold down. The billet battery holder made for these works great in this situation, you just need to grind down the front and rear edges a bit to fit under the bracket.

Re: December Special - Odyssey Battery PC1700T

Sorry guys to bring this one back from the dead, but after searching all old posts related to Odyssey batteries...

For a "one" large battery set up in a 460, considering:

- Tray is roughly 17 x 8
- Cable lengths ( a bit tight, both cables are short)
- Cable terminal type
- Bottom lip hold down in the tray

It seems that the right Odyseey battery that fits my truck is the PC1750T, or for a more tight fit the PC2150ST-M (1" longer and 2" taller than PC1750T). The PC1700 doesn't seem to be the best fit based on lack of bottom lip and terminal types.

Did anyone in the forum try to fit either a PC1750T or PC2150ST-M?

Grácias in advance for helping me avoid an 80lbs mistake return.

Re: December Special - Odyssey Battery PC1700T

For what it's worth, keep in mind that the battery doesn't need to "stand up" like they show it in the pictures. If it works better for you to have it lying down with the terminals on the bottom front, or top front, or left side, or whatever, of the battery, that's perfectly fine (though it can make it difficult to get jumper cables on if it comes to that and you may want a well insulated remote + post for such occaisions). I'm not sure if that helps your situation, but just something to consider. Also, you can order them with the + terminal either to the right or the left as you look at the batteries as pictured.

All the best,

-Dave G.

RE: December Special - Odyssey Battery PC1700T

My 1999 G500 has some off the shelf standard battery in it. I have not had any issues with it but am thinking of a dual battery system. The truck was originally fitted with a 100AH battery because of the Webasto heater. Standard battery for this model year was 74AH. I am considering an Odyssey for the house battery as well as upgrading the car battery with the same battery type and thought the Odyssey 1700 would be a good choice. I know the Odyssey has a 14.4 volt charging threshold which has been an issue in my Syncro camper that only throws out 13.7 volts to the battery with large guage wiring. I was wondering if there have been any issues with the PC1700 in the G500s or late model Europa vehicles.

I am also considering a pair of Mercedes 100AH batteries. Tom Sheppard's example comes to mind.

I have an Odyssey in my G500, and like it a WHOLE LOT better than the Optimas I've had.

The reverse terminal model fits in the pre-2002's a whole lot better; and check with J.R.'s thread to see where he filed down one of the tabs to better clear the mounting tabs on the G.

RE: December Special - Odyssey Battery PC1700T

I wouldn't hesitate. Even a not-fully-charged odyssey will out perform most other batteries. The pair in my G have probably never seen more than 13.8 volts and they soldier on perfectly happily. I'm sure they don't have the capacity they should, but even at 2x 44Ah (published) they've done the job for me for more years than I can count, including a brief down time of living untouched in my garage for a year plus while I mistakenly believed I needed a big flooded battery to start the diesel. One battery still starts the truck on the coldest mornings, including running the Webasto 30 minutes if I so choose, and the other runs the Engel for days out camping around the western US. I say go for it.

Re: December Special - Odyssey Battery PC1700T

Thanks,
The stock G500 battery 1998-2008 is a 74Ah battery
As I mentioned above, mine was originally fitted with an optional 100Ah version.
My 2002 G500 still had the original Mercedes battery when I sold it last month, with 112K miles and 10 years on it. I owned it for 4 years and bought it with 56K miles on it. The new owner just had it tested out and it appears to still be doing well.

Dutch, I am assuming you have the PC1700 mentioned in this advertising special but with reverse terminals, correct?
I like the Odysseys, so that would be an easy choice for me. I have a hard time bashing the Mercedes batteries though given my good, but brief experience with the '02.

34R-PC1500. The 1700 won't fit back in the shelf over the left rear wheel.

Here's the thread when I installed it 2 years ago:

Re: December Special - Odyssey Battery PC1700T

Mine's still going strong too but its not exposed to the demands that many of you put your through. It's my first sealed battery and should it's quiet reliable performance continue in the long run, it will be at the top of my short list for future batteries in my other vehicles.

I recently found what I think is a great price on Odyssey's charger - http://www.tnrbattery.com/odyssey-battery-charger-12-volt-25-amp-om... I've seen them on other sites at $150 + shipping. TNR's website info is incorrect as to applicability to the 1500. Check Odyssey's - http://www.odysseybattery.com/chargers.html for the best info.

RE: December Special - Odyssey Battery PC1700T

I'm interested that you had a 100ah battery fitted to your 99G. All the 100ah batteries I have seen specified are too long for the compartment above the wheel arch (300mm tight). What size/ manufacturer was it? The EPC says there were 100ah fitted but I've never worked out how they fit in.
Odessey 34R certainly looks like a nice choice but costly and near impossible to find in the uk. Varta agm are readily available though.

Per EPC, the 100 Ah battery for my G500 is part number 463 541 01 01, replaced by part number 004 541 75 01. Still available at the dealer for a measley $358 USD. Out of state dealers will not ship due to haz mat considerations.
