Water pump for 66 230s M180

What should be used to seal the bolts that attach the water pump to the aluminum housing?
When I removed the pump and the housing it looked like there was some dried "gunk" on the threads.  The bolts run all the way through the outer 1/2 of the housing, the holes are exposed inside.  There must be some thread sealant required or there could be some leakage around the 5 bolts.  (I have the 2 gaskets already)
I checked the EPC and expected to find the small copper crush washers.  They aren't listed.
My Service Manual for Passenger Cars starting 1959 (SM1202) only covers the 300SE which looks much different.  My Glenns manual skips the subject also.
Also - where should the notch on the water pump be located (i.e. 3:00, 6:00, etc).  Does it even matter?
Thanks!

That gunk on the bolt threads may be anti-sieze compound and RTV on the tip of the bolts.

Thanks, I'll ask at PepBoys.  I know the bolts will leak without something.  I was hoping there was something better than a product that comes in a tube.  Of all the years I've been wrenching on this car I've never had to use a sealant/gasket/RTV product.  I'm really surprised the EPC doesn't show a smaller version of the copper crush washers.  The local dealership was of no help - other than they want to charge me $3 apiece for the "normal" size copper crush washers vs. the $0.79 that Caliber charges.  Plus they only have 2 in stock and want me to drive down and pre-pay before they will order them.  UPS / FedEx must love me, I order more stuff from California just b/c my Stealership is too stupid to treat me right.
