Do not try this at home unless you take responsibility for your own work. Nor will I be responsible for lack of entertainment value. On a flat windshield one of the rust promoting conditions, that is not noticed until damage has occurred, is water getting under the windshield gasket. When you do find a telltale rust bubble forcing the gasket up, it is in an advanced stage that makes for expensive & extensive repairs. Due to that condition which had developed on a 1989 Montero I owned, I wanted to check my G after washing it. I was upset to find out I had water under the windshield gasket. I checked for this after hand washing & found it was always the same. Water at the base of the windshield on both sides. The one tool that helped with moving the gasket lip is a MB interior tool that is sold by one of the G parts vendors. I also used this tool a lot when installing the Brake Controller wiring. I did it alone so it is possible but harder. I cut the nozzle and marked the side of the cartridge so that I would know where the nozzle angle was while using the caulk gun. I had to re-cut the nozzle for a larger opening due to the thickness of the glazing compound after I started. It is quite hard to pump with a std caulk gun. That will give you oozing black sticky stuff coming out all around the gasket. Pay attention to what you touch, where you place your hands, what you lean up against, etc because no matter how careful you are you will be plagued with spots of this stuff starting to show up every where. This is also about the time you will be come acquainted with what it takes to “remove with a dry rag” After finishing pumping the whole tube completely around the entire windshield I thought that this should be easier to clean up than boat caulk and you do not have a cure time to worry about. I set out to wipe the gasket & paint down. I scraped the excess off with scrap plastic credit card material. Then started to wipe off what was left. Same results, very difficult to remove & stuck to the gasket like semi-hardened glue. Trying to figure out what to use other than a harsh solvent was difficult but I finally remembered what I had used successfully, removing old weather-stripping adhesive off the aluminum door, on my old Airstream when replacing the rotten door gaskets. It is safe & not harsh on materials. I had managed to find it in the local Ace hardware store. I had some left and this worked great. I found it was all that was needed to be able to clean and smooth the gasket down with a slightly dampened rag, turning & replacing with a new rag when needed. (Have lots of cut up rags available. This stuff worked on 50 year old gasket adhesive on a Airstream door that acetone/paint remover/etc would not soften or remove from the aluminum. http://www.orange-sol.com/household/index.html Drew, my shims were from a flooring project too.
