RE: Available G versions intended for commercial use

raicar - 5/19/2010 3:17 AM

The models being available not only in Europe and down under, but many other parts of the world are the following:

1. G 280 station wagon long wheelbase (5 or 6 doors)

Raicar

Raicar,

Do you know which brand of roof rack is on the white G280 LWB 6door? Looks kind of like a Front Runner save for the rounded sides.

TIA!
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

that's a P R E I N I N G roof rack, which is mucho epensive, but very sturdy. It is basically tailormade and can be ordered in many different specifications. As this is the picture thread - here you go:

Thanks for all the pics Raiko!

I looked back at the drab green DoKa and saw it was a Preining rack too.

Do you have a URL for them? This is all I could find;

Hi Jeremy, this is the pictures threads - that's why I come up again and again with photos. If no pictures attached - we possibly get "dutched" to the main G-Forum  !!!

Mr. PREINING is rather an engineer than a marketeer. He's basically living from the larger scale orders he's getting, as he's having quite a network within the factory.

As I'm on a frequent basis in Graz, it's easy for me to have a little chat with him and discuss the specs of a roof rack I like to have. For you guys over the pond, it's easier to take the VIN of a Canadian Army G 270 and order via a US or Canadian Mercedes dealership, than to try to contact PREINING KG in Graz. This way you avoid the costs of shipping from Austria to the US, which might be enormous (given the heavy weight and large size of those racks)!. BTW Karl Volger (nick: Fernweh), the Rockmeister has already fabricated a look a like rear ladder....so why give him a try for a serial production!

Well if I could find out how to properly post a pic here I would! (thanks for the leniency in the meantime Dutch!!)

Any suggestions where to find VIN's for the Canadian G270's?

I looked on Karl's G-Wagen Accessories site and don't see his roof ladder yet.

Thanks as always for the help. You're a fantastic resource!

Re: G 280 CDI BM11 (double cab) roll out at Mike Pagger's place

Here You have a Canadian VIN

WDB4613311x163637

But I am not sure how much this will help You. About two weeks ago I was trying to find out the price of a Preining rack through my dealer, exactly the way Raiko suggested, and dealer`s answer was that the part in no more available.

RE: G 280 CDI BM11 (double cab) roll out at Mike Pagger's place

Hello again,

as far as the PREINING roofrack is concerned with Canadian army specification (colour bronzegreen MB 6431) there are 3 in stock at DAIMLER's logistic central in Germersheim. If your local parts guy has problems finding it, make a print of picture #1 (attached). I know that the PREINING roof rack is the one to have (sturdy, made for commercial esp. military use), be aware - there is a "slight" mark up being charged: PREINING means premium priced - see picture #2 (attached). That's why I made the proposal, why not give somebody locally a chance to build a look a like for half of the money.

Raicar

P.S. The EPC lists this particular one as a north American market (Canada) available product, so chances are good you get it at your local dealership - maybe one of you guys over there tries at the dealership. At least Sean (Eurotruck), Vlad (four by four), etc. could check for you....pls. keep us posted!

6.300 Euro? That is a silly price. The guys at Daimler must be really crazy.

Last Monday there was a military car auction in Vienna and there was also a Puch 300GDN with a nice Preining rack. The successful bid was 4.800 euro.

Thanks for the pics Raiko.

I just contacted our local dealer (oldest one in the USA) using this exact pic #1 and the Canadian VIN and the parts guy said that even though it's in the EPC it doesn't show he can get the part for the USA since it's a Canadian vehicle. NOW, if it was a vehicle that was brought into the USA and had a US title associated with it, if you showed that to MBZ USA, they then would sell you the part. Without a US title they can't sell parts on vehicles from different regions/countries.

He did say that this actual VIN(WDB4613311x163637) didn't come with the rack/ladder.

Part numbers regardless;

Ladder; 461-850-01-40

Rack; 461-850-51-03

I hope that helps!

Ha, nice to read that someone else is also "jonesing" for a Preining today. My roof is lonely. Must quickly replace my Sureco that I had atop my 94 with something a bit more closely matching the style of my G.

RE: G 280 CDI BM11 (double cab) roll out at Mike Pagger's place

Hi Steve,

they are made of plein vanilla steel - takes four men to get the roof rack mounted - it's really heavy! Besides of the weight, there is second disadvantage which is the lack of a better rust protection. My second PREINIG has rust spots at the outside of the legs, as had my first one after about the same time span. Will have those parts plastic coated soon.

For you roof rack afficionados there is a similar rack, which is positioned closer to the roof skin, thus making it easier to enter parking garages. It's powdercoated, has the same rails like the PREINING rack - so you can individually distribute for example the Sprinter lashing eyes - plus it can be dissambled and thus the freight over the pond should be way cheaper. The only thing I don't like is the lower mounting point of the rear ladder - needs drilling in the cabin. Over all it seems to be top notch quality - the brand is LeTech: www.lennartz-technik.de/Komponenten.77.0.html

As this is the pictures thread....

Wow, they have some cool stuff at LeTech.
Liked the side flaps, rock sliders, winch bar and bolstered seats.
Also more items being developed.

Raiko, do You remember the rack on Peter`s 280CDI?

That one was already plastic-coated from new. I think You also took some detail photos.
