1980 300GD LWB "Radio Flyer"; Stage 1 complete!

I purchased this wonderful rig about a month ago. Still VERY happy that I did. I've found a few surprises but overall I'm very pleased, especially since the PO(2nd owner) had all the original federalization paperwork/pics/notes from the 1st owner, original bill of sale from Germany to the USA, customs importation invoice, most all of the receipts (LOTS of $$ on maintenance), etc. Anyways, it's been kept in great shape (no typical rust whatsoever) and been a local Portland, OR rig since its importation in '81, but there was still room for clean-up.

Stage 1 consisted of;
--De-chroming front Mercedes star (I still need to do this to the antenna)
--Painting silver factory Mercedes(Puch actually) center caps "military black"
--De-rusting lugs and painting "military black"
--Painting side and rear Mercedes-Benz emblems "military black" (I'll purchase OEM emblems when I fully resto it)
--Painting rear Puch license plate frame "military black" (was faded)
--De-ambering signals (flows better IMHO with the military black theme)
--NOS Oregon license plate
--Upgrade all fasteners associated with above items to stainless steel

Onto the pics...

When I bought it;

First step was black Plasti-Dip'ing Mercedes star;

Next was wire wheeling the lug bolts and then painting them(next time I'll have them powdercoated but paint will do for now) and sanding/priming/painting the center caps;

Next was sanding/priming/painting rear Puch plate frame and rear badge;

I was going to remove the front mirrors and treat the side emblems to the same, but due to a time crunch before NWMF this weekend, I painted them on the G (still turned out great);

Next was waiting for the clear front markers(thanks for the swap Hunter!), new Mercedes clear side markers, and amber section of factory tails, to be professionally smoked(lightly) and then clear'd over by Bill at East Portland Auto Body(the best)!!

And it's done for now(will post better daylight pics soon);

I realize it's not everyone's taste, but feedback is always welcome! All for the love of G.

Thanks very much Chris. It is really in fantastic condition for its age but it's definitely not perfect. The pics do a good job of hiding the scratches, dents, dings, paint chips, etc. One day I hope to fully frame-off resto it.

I looked the truck over in Sheridan. Looks great, be sure to keep the stock motor though.

Amazing G, very nice condition. You don't see such nice rust free examples around here.
Very cool to see the Rotzler winch up front there as well, was it part of the original configuration as ordered at the time?

Would you mind taking and posting a few pics of the dash and switches as well?

Thanks Eric! Do you mean keep it (ie don't sell it) when I upgrade to a 603A or 606A? I can't drive 88hp forever.

Thx Bram! I agree--rust free is rare, hence why I spent more than I originally wanted to on this W460.
Yes, it's part of the data card/SA number sheet. Interestingly enough, I have original pics of the federalization process when this G came over from Germany and the Rotzler wasn't on the front...so the PO to me (2nd owner) sourced one and had it installed. I would have done the same if they hadn't.

Certainly(keep in mind that I will be getting new/fresh switches to replace the faded ones. I'll probably keep the CL LPS switches just as a testament to it's history--and to push me to find out just what the heck "clearance lamps" are in relation to DOT standards as they were installed only for federalization. I'll probably also source a period-correct Becker or Blaupunkt radio..but we'll have to see about that as I'd like to have tunes out in the middle of nowhere);

Hey Jeremy,
Just a tip. It only took me 6 years but I finally replaced the lenses on my locker indicators. I got them from Eurotruck and they were cheap. You simply pop out the light housing with a little prying, then pull out the light socket from the back of the housing, then through the back use a small screwdriver to push out the old lense. Pop in the new and you're good to go. Takes 10 minutes. No need to replace the whole housing. Makes the cluster console that much pertier.

Yup yup Steve-O, already on my (ever growing) to-do list. ;-)

First priority is getting the diff lockers functioning again, more overall maintenance, then an engine swap I'm afraid. I'd love driving it even more if hills weren't such a str..ug...gl...e.....
Ever wish you had more juice in your 617A Steve, or are you happy with the power output?

617A would be best period-correct "look" but I'm thinking 603A or 606A would make me happiest in the power dept.

Of course it´s not 100% perfect. I am talking about the overall appearance of a 30 year old G

I am in the process of slowly restoring a 1980 G230 cab myself and I want the same original "look" as your car, with standard steel rims, narrow tires and so on. Mine was originaly the same color as your´s but will probably be painted Agüave Grün when I get that far

I wonder why the front Diff lense wears out more than the rear? My looks exactly the same.

Mark :err:

Mine was that way too Mark. I noticed, last time I fell asleep at the wheel, that I had a locker signal impression on my forehead. So, one would logically assume that the indicator wear is due to years of rubbing ones forehead on the lens while "nap-driving". Duh.

Jeremy, to answer your question. I'm satisfied with my engine mostly while on flat roads or screaming down hills. I've learned to deal with slow up hill speeds. Still a little emotionally challenging but I just remind myself that I'm not in a hurry. So, I get there a hour later than everyone else. No biggie. Upgrading your truck to the 606 is a bit of a task, a lot of time, and, a lot of money. The 617A is sooooooo reliable and soooo simple and soooo easy to drop in, it's a really really tough argument to make the change for the power in my opinion. It's also more tolerable to straight veggie.

My plan is to watch Syncro and see what he does. He'll be doing some tweaking over the next couple of years. Then just copy him and take advantage of his resources and resourcing knowledge after I get him all liquored up. He's a smart feller and has been watchin/reading all the turbo diesel forums. Let's keep my plan a secret though.

Can anyone tell me where I can get one of those Europa Gelandewagen spare tire covers? Okay, I guess I'll start with Europa. Anyway, don't like my current bling-bling one if anybody needs a silver and chrome one...

Why not keep it Carmine Red to be original? Value would be higher than a complete paint change IMHO.
