Yes, had to shoot several frames to get the timing with the amount of light from the LED-flashlight onto the cliff wall.

I have been experimenting with this technique too - light painting. Certainly helps to have a warm-white and/or high CRI LED. A non-LED light source like halogen or HID will give a wider colour spectrum but LED's are catching up.

Magnificent shots.

Thanks.

Yeap, you´re right, the color temperature are way off with the LED flashlight compared to the light from the fire, but that was what i had at the time. I will certainly bring some colored gels next time I hit the Sahara

Another fault I made was to crank the ISO way up to a 1,000, but still a 30 sec. exposure, hence the weak trace of digital noise, I´ll keep it below 640 the next time (though the 5D MKII are really good at keeping this subtle), will also give me a lager margin for timing of the light painting I think.

A word of advice, do not use 640 iso, or anywhere close to it. 640, even 400, still has unacceptable noise because I am a perfectionist.

For highest quality, set the camera on 50, 100 max, then use "bulb" setting and a cable release (there is a simple electric one for the 5d2). The cable release has a button lock so you can start it and then go walking about with your lighting or just hanging out talking during the +/- 8 minute exposure.

Also, for best results use the "mirror lock up" setting so that the moment the shutter opens, the camera is already 100% motionless. This is actually more important for exposures 30s and shorter.

The added benefit of using iso 50 and such long exposures (you might even get up to 15-30 minutes) is you get a lot more time to deal with creative lighting by hand.

Good luck.
