Some old friends get together in Mendocino National Forest in Northern California every year. I manage to get out there about once every 6 years or so. On this, my third return, we decided to go as a family and work it into a week-long round trip with other fun activities along the way there and back. 5 people, 1 G-wagen, 3000 miles, 8 days and on the last day, all of us agreed we weren't ready to go home and would stay out a few more days if responsibilities weren't calling us back. Key to pix: Day 1 - Wyatt and Owen polish off sandwiches at a rest area in Eagle, CO that had a beautiful river-side picnic area, a real working railroad caboose for the kids to explore, and a visitor's center with some really fine photographic artwork on display and a proprietor artist http://stevetaylor.redbubble.com/ who gave unsolicited tips, like this place to have prints made on aluminum substrate http://www.bayphoto.com/ Day 3 - The city park in Colusa, CA has a great little climbing wall that was just the ticket for kids cooped up in the car for going on 3 days now. Day 4 - Cedar Camp, Mendocino NF, full of Land Rovers and old friends Day 4 again, fishing in Lett's Lake, also Mendo NF. Owen caught his dinner this day! Day 6 - Spencer Hot Springs, middle of nowhere, NV a beautifully relaxing soak before lunch with not another human soul to be found in a 20 mile radius Day 7 - Petroglyphs in Capitol Reef National Park at a time of year we could be almost alone in contemplating them Later Day 7 - Climbing on goblins in Goblin Valley State Park, UT Day 8 - Green River State Park UT, and at every chance - a little campfire time for story telling and marshmallow roasting. Lots of good friends and good fun, and a vehicle that could do all the various thing the G can do so well helped make it possible. All the best, -Dave G. My annual trip out west with other friends is pushed out this year as we're going to Death Valley and wanted to move it back a few weeks to let it cool off a little. If you'll be in CO in September, let us know. All the best, -Dave G. | ||
