190D idle issues

I've got an '85 190D with just over 200k. Recently, when driving at highway speeds for extended periods (1+ hour at 65mph), it would start to idle very roughly (as though it was running on 3 out of the 4 cylinders) as soon as I got off the highway and pulled up to a stop sign. As I've been putting about 230 miles week on it I'd really like to get this sorted out. It's not burning oil, is still getting about 34mpg on dino diesel and otherwise runs ok. It's also got an issue with the oil gauge, which pegs at 3 as soon as the vehicle is started and doesn't move; oil sender? Would really appreciate any suggestions as I'm driving this from Phoenix to Tucson without a/c and I really don't want to be sitting by the side of the road when it's 115 degrees waiting two hours for a tow truck. Thanks.
