When the engine is hot and I shut off, it will not restart, just cranks and cranks. Happened in the drug store drive through lane last night. I called my friend who works for MB and he told me to raise the hood and take a bottle of cold water, then pour the water on top of the back of the engine at the bell housing from the center of the engine along to the fender, at the fire wall. He said the cold water cools off the CPS Crankshaft Position Sensor and the car would start. It is what they do on road side service. I went inside, bought a $1 bottle of cold water and it worked. I have now purchased a new CPS Crankshaft Position Sensor. Just thought I would pass along the trick. He said if no water, open hood and wait about 15 minutes, as the engine cools down, the contacts work again so you can start. Very common problem. AGuess

Old crank sensor, pre 1998 were on the front of the engine. In 1998 moved to bell housing for a more accurate reading. The flywheel now has windows cut into it, and eng control unit can tell what position eng is in. I am going to replace it tomorrow.

The 290 diesels have the same sensor and I never hear of them going bad. That, in my opinion, is because the exhaust is way over on the other side of the engine. So, while you are busy installing the CPS, see if you can figure a way to thermally insulate it. A little aluminum foil hat might be enough. (Yes, I know how buried that part is).

Just looking at the EPC, I see the original part has been updated; and when you do a back track on the new part number, it shows for the G55 AMG. I wonder if it has better heat tolerance for the turbocharged engine.

It took about 5 minutes with the engine cool. The only real problem in doing this is that the sensor is so far down on top of the bell housing that it is hard to reach, I am 6' and it was a stretch with my arm to reach it. Maybe I have short arms.

Fairly easy and probably good for another 50k. Water bottle sounds like a good trick to get you out of a jam and back to the house! Nice thing about the G, it is fairly predictable and not too much new under the sun. Bob

Posts: 555 | Re: CPS Crankshaft Position Sensor - Trick I hoping I'm not tempting fate here (and I do carry a spare) but I changed my CPS about 160,000 miles ago and have had no recurrence of the the symptoms since. It gets hot here too, over 45 degrees for about 2 months in the summer and up to 48 degrees regularly. The tip with the water is great; water is always carried in the car.

You might want to carry one of these too, speeds up the process. http://uk.rs-online.com/web/c/?searchTerm=+freezer++aerosol&sra=oss
