W463 2002 - Major electrical problem

Hey guys !

Been using my revamped G500 2002 for a couple weeks now and I noticed the in-dash display tends to fade off randomly at times. Sometimes it's perfectly lit but sometimes it goes darker and darker and edges are faded to the point I cant read the texts anymore.

This morning, hell broke loose on my way to work. ALL electrical components started to flash intermitently ( headlights / whole Dashboard / srs light / reserve tank light / high beams icon / etc ). Even the flashers and power Windows are acting up like if someone would be connecting and disconnecting the battery every 2 secs. I had to force my headlights on so people in front of me did not think I was trying to communicate via morse codes. The girl at the drivethru also gave me a weird look when my driver window was going down by little notches at a time.

This is a major glitch and Im scared it causes something even worst on the engine or electrical parts. Any idea what it could be ?

Dashboard messages also have new warnings :
- Display problem - visit workshop
- SRS problem - visit workshop

HELP ME PLZ ! I thought I was over with all Electronic glitches in this thing, seems I was wrong...
thx

Re: W463 2002 - Major electrical problem

ioowee,
Have tried charging your battery overnight? At least for the 400CDI it is known that it does not like emptied batteries... Causes all kind of electric gremlins.
Cheers
A.

RE: W463 2002 - Major electrical problem

A couple of thoughts:

- Back in January you were chasing a number of electrical gremlins. Wires were replaced, pins reset, etc. Have you installed or done any repairs since the heating ventilation adventure?

- There were enough 2002s that had electrical issues that it got a lot of attention on G-Wagen forums. The biggest culprit was the alternator. It was putting power out, it just wasn't clean power (what ever that might mean). Once the alternator was swapped out for known good alternators, problems went away.

- Check you alternator output. If one of the brushes is not making contact 100% of the time due to wear, you won't necessarily get an alternator light. Maybe a low voltage warning (I don't know the 2002 systems). Hook up a voltmeter and monitor output for a while. As mentioned, you may have a battery that is on its last leg. Cold is the quick killer of weak batteries.

- See if you can recall as many faults that you saw this morning and see if they all seem to go to a particular box or maybe share a common ground point.

Granted, I'm not an Electrical person, but I think what they might mean by "Dirty" power is an Abnormal amount of "A.C.-Ripple" power leaving an Alternator, which can mess-up a Battery.

For O.P., check out this Diagnostic Video from Fluke. It is very Informative:

I'm not an electrical person either, but I enjoy learning about it. Yep, "AC Ripple" would be bad and thanks. That makes perfect sense but I've never heard exactly what the root cause was on the 2002s.

During my aviation days, our theory about electrical power was that it was all simply "smoke". When you saw or smelled smoke, it was the electrical power escaping... and you could never get it back.

Re: W463 2002 - Major electrical problem

Hey ! Thx guys, been charging the beast all night long and runs good ever since. I think I might have left some device on constant power the night before.

The fading dashboard has always been there and even though the electrical mayhem stopped happening, it still fades at random times. Not a big deal if its just that.

To be confirmed... Thx again !
