Parking Brake Button Broke...

New to me, but I guess not all that unusual ?

The black plastic button at the end of my parking brake decided to split in two, and gave up the ghost. The actuator rod is still fully operational, and it seems that this black plastic button is merely ornamental and cushioning.

At any rate, I do want to replace it. Did a search and found an old discussion about 460's doing the same thing. sounds like there was no replacement part available, short of ordering a whole new lever assembly - can only imagine what good old MBZ dealer would want for that.

Anyway - anyone have a solution to this situation ? Substitute part, adapt another part to work, etc ?

Seems like this is an inevitable "look forward to" breaking item for us all at some point.

THX !

RE: Parking Brake Button Broke...

You are correct in that the button is not available as a separate part.

Parking Brake Handle is P/N: A.463.420.05.84. MSRP is US$530 discounted at the right dealer to US$397.50.

I think I'd try to find a matching part at a You Pull It junk yard that has a good inventory of MB's or other European cars.

Re: Parking Brake Button Broke...

Thanks Dutch... kinda thought that might be the case.

Maybe some creative and innovative aftermarket guy will come up with a machined replacement part someday - hey, there is a built-in (albeit small) market as this little piece is pretty much destined to fail at some point in time, for every G.

I'd pay $$ for that part to an entrepreneurial problem-solver, as opposed to the dealers ransom ... bet others would too.

Re: Parking Brake Button Broke...

I fixed mine with superglue. Still holding up after 2 years.

Re: Parking Brake Button Broke...

A2014300227 is the plastic knob on a 460 / 461. About 2 euros as I recall it. Replaced it 6 month ago in mine.

I know it's a different handle in a 463, but might be worth trying to adapt?

RE: Parking Brake Button Broke...

Mine did the same thing several years ago. I still have the tip, although haven't gotten around to gluing it back on.

I have been very disappointed in the ABS plastics used in many parts in my G-Wagon. Certain parts like this becomes very very brittle and falls apart easily.

If you find a G-Wagon junk yard, let me know. There are a number of parts that I would like to get. For example, I don't want to pay $250+ for the plastic door pockets. I just removed both of them when they broke.

RE: Parking Brake Button Broke...

I patched those up with a washer, fiberglass cloth and epoxy.  After the patch hardened up I drilled a hole through the goop covering the washer hole and re-mounted the pockets.  Completely forgot about the fix.  They are very strong now.

Re: Parking Brake Button Broke...

For my 2002, I used a button off of a VW Vanagon. Good fit and looked stock.
A used complete VW handbrake runs 25-40 on thesamba.com, or check junkyards for other vehicles with hand brakes

Re: Parking Brake Button Broke...

Apologies for my slow / late response. I used a similar diameter aluminium rod and fabricated a new button, That was six years ago and my memory is failing me. I can't rtemember if I had to drill a hole to fit the pushrod or how it is staying in position. It is still giving excellent servicesix years later, albeit without most of the black paint.

RE: Parking Brake Button Broke...

As others have said, lots of ways to skin that cat, after it's dead. But this might be a good reminder time for anyone casually wondering when theirs will die. The parking brake assembly will last longer if it's used correctly. The key that its being used correctly is in the sound. Or rather lack of it. Hearing big ratcheting sound as you apply the brake? Hearing a "sproing" kind of noise when you release it? Both are signs that there's a bunch more wear and tear going on than there needs to be.

To set the brake:
Push button in and hold
pull lever to appropriate tension
release button
give the lever a slight tug upward to be sure the ratchet pawl is fully settled into the teeth it's engaged with
release the lever

To release the brake
Pull up on the lever slightly to remove force from the ratchet pawl
push button and hold
lower lever to rest position
release button

No noise. Minimized wear on components. Trying to push the button with the ratchet engaged takes more force on the button than if we remove the force from the ratchet before we try to push the button. Pulling up with the button pressed saves all the sliding of the ratchet parts on all the teeth that don't need to be engaged.

Happy parking.

Re: Parking Brake Button Broke...

WELL ... it's been 6 years since my original post.

Never did get around to it as the handbrake still works, but that missing button makes an indent in my finger ; )

Just hit 160K and decided to give my truck a little love on several deferred maintenance items (bushings, mufflers, front seats, and that handbrake lever button).

ANYTHING NEW regarding that brake lever button fix ? I really dont want to throw down $400 on a new factory assembly... rather soend that $$ elsewhere on my truck.

THX !

Try one of these and save the other $393 for fuel.

For the door pockets, another early 463 G owner has 3D printed reinforcement pieces. It says sold out, but you could ask him to do another run.

Re: Parking Brake Button Broke...

Thats awesome ... really appreciate the tip and just ordered one from Pelican.

New Check List :

Handbrake Button (solved)
Suspension Bushings (poly or rubber?)
Renew Front Seat Leather (find a source for the skins, maybe custom shop ?)
Upgrade Radio Headunit (something that looks somewhat stock)

Re: Parking Brake Button Broke...

Got the parking brake button as suggested from Pelican (these guys are a great resource BTW).

While there noticed they have OEM leather (?) parking brake handle too - on backorder but it arrived after a month or so, genuine MBZ part.

Can't remember price but seemed like it was around $20 ... amazing for a MBZ part !

Tugged off the old one and slipped on the new one ... like new.

These trucks are funny, some things are crazy expensive, others not so much.

Thanks again for suggesting Pelican.

Do you have a part number or link for the handle? It sounds nice.
