M113 collective wisdom please? So my MY2000 G500 engine is intermittently misfiring on one cylinder at idle, and I haven't figured out why. It seems to clear up as soon as the revs are up over 700 RPM or so, and otherwise runs as smooth as ever, although it now uses about a liter of oil every 2,000 miles or so. I think some of it is leaking somewhere. History: 258,000 miles. No mechanical repairs ever (on the engine - drive train), except for fan belt tensioner and idler pulley, and serpentine belt. No engine ancillaries repaired either, ever, and it even has the original coolant in it, except for a few pints I've added over the years. Of course I change the oil and filters regularly. Electrical repairs include mass airflow sensor, crank position sensor, pressure/temp sensor replacements, spark plugs twice, spark plug wires twice, and all coil packs. All of which were just done in attempt to resolve the misfire. It's shown no codes on the OBDII, other than minor EVAP leakage. I have not checked compression, nor done anything with the injectors, but I'm heading that way. Any common problems or thoughts on the M113 that I should be looking for? Secondly, I wonder why complete used M113s are so cheap on eBay? Thanks in advance, Garret Edited by G4Garret 3/24/2019 8:06 PM

I actually owe you one anyway. Several years ago you put me onto the Rotex Gold brake pads. They are the absolute finest I've ever used. Sadly, they are NLA. DUTCH

G4Garret - 3/24/2019 11:51 AM ...I wonder why complete used M113s are so cheap on eBay? ... 'Cause their insides are rotted out by owners who never changed the coolant? Sorry, couldn't resist. But you really should consider doing some maintenance like that. Speaking of which, do you do any regular maintenance of the fuel system? Filters, injector cleaner like BG-44K, throttle body cleaning, IACV cleaning? All of those things can contribute to the symptoms you describe. Since it's kind of a wet season now I'd also consider giving any exposed electrical connectors a look including a drop of something like ACF-50 to combat corrosion and gremlins caused by high resistance. A little random miss at idle can be a tricky one to find for sure. Best of luck with it! -Dave G.

M113 collective wisdom please? Hi Dutch, Yes, I wish I were closer, and we'd hook it right up and see what it says. I'm kind of puzzled that I am not getting a check-engine light or trouble code. I'm leaning toward an injector though. I was initially worried when it fist surfaced, mainly about catalytic converter damage, but I just pushed on since it didn't set a trouble code, or seem to affect running at speed or impact mileage, and I ended up completing a trip to DC and NYC. I might just drive down to Atlanta anyway, at this point I kind of doubt it will hurt anything more. You're right about the Rotex Gold Brake pads. They work great. I'm saddened to hear they are no longer available though. I still have the original Rotex pads on my truck back in 2005, with well over 200K miles on them. I never imagined that pads could last that long, and work this well. Whatever it takes, I plan to keep it going. I love this truck. Garret

M113 collective wisdom please? Well, you got me there! It's true, I have never drained or changed the coolant in almost 20 years. I'm in that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it mode", kind of fearing that the cooling system must be in a natural state of equilibrium now, and changing it might upset that equilibrium, kind of like global warming, you know. So I figure I'm saving trees, and maybe humanity, by not changing it. Yeah, that's it. I have changed the fuel filter about 10 years ago, but have never used injector cleaner, or messed with the IACV. I kind of forgot about that gizmo. Time to check it out. Thanks, Garret

Garret My Audi Q7 has 64,000 miles on a set and still going. Normal Audi brake pads last about 20K miles. Maybe the reason that the Rotex pads are NLA is that they were too good, and they had no repeat business after the first set purchased. It's really sad that they are no longer available! They were definitely superior to anything else.

The sds was essential when finding the faulty part or parts, coils and injectors can be tested and ruled out. Fuel trim data is helpful as are test actuations, etc. I replaced plugs and wires, MAF, fuel and air filters, catalytic converters. The MAF failed a test with the sds and the Cats were a logic based replacement. Currently mine is 95% miss free and next up are o2 sensors in an attempt to get some fuel economy back. The p442 code gets thrown every few months, smoke tests have not revealed the source. A vacuum leak can potentially cause the misfires. You can buy, borrow a sds, but the learning curve is steep. For less money a sharp specialist with the right tools will get you all fixed up without firing the expensive parts cannon. Matt

M113 collective wisdom please? Pleased to follow up on my random misfire. I ordered the correct Bosch Premium Oxygen Sensors with the help of Sean at ET, Thank You! On the Europa G500, finding the correct sensors is not as easy as one would think, I can confirm that 2002 and up sensors do not work and EPC isn't totally correct due to federalization. Bosch 13798 is the correct sensor for all 4 locations. My milage is back up to the crappy range(13-15 mpg), up from the absurd (9-11 mpg) and the misfire is completely gone. In my case the Cats were deteriorated to the point of restricting airflow, MAF was occasionally at fault and the O2 sensors were slow/lazy. PS. If anyone wants 4 O2 sensors for 2002+ G500. send me a PM. Used 4K miles, $100. 2 Bosch 16330 2 Bosch 16318 EDIT: SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD Edited by Aircruiser 5/7/2019 10:49 AM

Thanks for that info Matt. I just ordered two of the Bosch 13798. My down stream O2 sensors had interrupted data flow along with the catalytic converters not working any more. What do you know about cat delete and just running clean pipe and 2 new down stream O2 sensors. Car is running pretty crappy right now without the O2 sensors in addition to waking up the neighbors when I start it up. M113 collective wisdom please? Same problem with mine. Took forever to figure out. Ignition wires frayed causing arc ONLY under certain conditions. Once replaced, all good. Also, had to do with excessive oil thrown on said wires causing arc. Regret remedial explanation. Edited by JCH4 10/26/2021 7:27 PM
