When I experienced my instrument cluster electrical problem a number replied that it was likely due to corrosion in the front SAM. Like it is a common occurrence. Has any thought been given to preventative maintenance by using a corrosion block similar to those used in marine industry. Something like Boeshield or TS-11? Seems a couple hours unplugging connections and spraying with corrosion inhibitor would be a worthwhile annual maintenance item. Thoughts? Is there any downside to treating connections on SAM with one of these products? Thanks G4me | ||

I don’t know if there is a downside to spraying it but replacing a SAM is not cheap. Worth the maintenance up front. I would also look into how any moisture is getting to it in the first place. | ||

I think one of the big issues with corrosion and the front SAM is that water leaks/seeps in above it via the windshield wiper mechanism. I think the seal goes bad or comes loose where the wiper pivots. | ||

We have had steady rain for a couple of days so donned my rain coat and went out to check front SAM for moisture. Bone dry. Agree with Flooby treat the cause not the symptom. Now I will be looking at wiper shaft seal replacement as preventative maintenance. Although in my case my instrument cluster failed had nothing to do with SAM so this will be an effort to prevent electrical gremlins in future as a corroded SAM seems common and to be cause of most of them. | ||

I did receive it back in perfect working order. I installed it on Saturday but have not had chance to speak with shop about exactly what was wrong with it yet. Since I have not been able to drive it for awhile I took it out for a drive yesterday and the window regulator went belly up. Broken white plastic cable holder. Birds nest of cable in motor spool area. Argh. | ||

Glad the instrument panel is back and working. Yeah, the windows regulators on the earlier Gs are notorious for that. And unfortunately, the old style is not available so you have to use the new style which involves modifying the door. On one of the various G sites there is a great DIY on how to do it. | ||

I am actually interested in the DIY improvements using better pulley wheel and bike parts. The more metal the better I guess. I have not found the posting detailing modifying front regulator. | ||

I have not head much about the newer ones failing. Supposedly they have beefier pulleys and a more balanced force on the glass which is supposed to make them last longer. I tried replacing the plastic pulleys with aluminum ones, but it is a lot more difficult than it looks. If found the correct size pulleys (aluminum screen door roller wheels) but mounting them to the mechanism so that the mounts still cleared the mechanism proved very difficult (never got it to work quite right). I just decided to update to the new design, buy the cheap Chinese ones on Ebay, modify the door as needed, and then replace if/when needed.
