Update

I've made an appointment with an Indie shop for next week. Fixing this is beyond my ability. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Re: Damn! Help Needed

I had a dead battery on my 1997 G300. AAA came to jump start it and it didn't work. I was worried that the AAA surge charger fried something. I took the battery out and had it recharged at Sears all day and reinstalled it. Crank but no start.

Sooooo. I thought it must be either ECU, K40, or glow plug relay fried by the jump start. I left it on trickle charger for a month, came back with all 3, new K40, new GPR, and unocked eBay ECU by Alan McR. The car started fine without any thing. I put in the new K40 and GPR for good measure and also checked to make sure the back up ECU functioned, it did.

My situation was different in that you have no starter turn over which seems less like a K40 or ECU problem and more like a bad starter solenoid problem. In any case, I hope you get it fixed soon

On mine not only does the starter not turn over, there is not even a click or any sound when turning the key to start, This is a frustrating first in 18+ yrs of owning it. I, too, hope to get it fixed soon!

RE: Damn! Help Needed

DUTCH - 12/4/2020 8:08 AM

I went to drive the 2000 G500 today, but it won't even turn over. Not even a click from the starter solenoid when I turn the key to try to start it.

All lights and indicators are working. My smart battery charger tested the battery, and says it is A-OK and fully charged. I drove it a couple of weeks ago with no problems

However, no power to the starter or its solenoid today.

Where to start to diagnose and fix this? This is the first time this has ever happened in 18 yrs of ownership.

TIA!

Check out Fuse #57 located below the glove box. On my 2004 this fuse blew and I had the same no starter work and or trying as you. I would do this before anything else

Additional Finding and Thoughts

Before when it would not start, I heard no sound from the engine or starter either with the ignition switch in the "On" position or the "Start" position.

Today I turned the ignition to the "On" position while connecting my STAR Diagnosis unit. Initially all was silent with the switch in the "On" position. After a minute or two an electronic whine started in the engine compartment. That reminded me that I had always heard that whine when the ignition switch was in the "on" position and before starting the engine.

I decided to try to start it; and "Bingo", it started. That electronic whine must be significant to the engine starting; and some sort of intermittent electrical connection must be interfering.

My Star unit says that there is sporadically disturbed CAN Communication with the engine system in the Electronic Transmission Control. I wonder where that is coming from. Initial thoughts would be the micro-switch in the shifter or possibly that infamous leaking electrical connector down on the transmission body. I did change it several years ago.

To prevent this from happening on the long drive home after the new owner picks it up, I plan to bring it to the high end Indie Shop on Tuesday for them to sort out. Hopefully they can.

Personally, I think the truck knew that I was going to take it on my last drive before the new owner picks it up; and the truck just decided to let me know that I was not finished with it yet.

Re: Damn! Help Needed

Confirming that the electronic whine is present on my 2000 G500 with the key in the on position.

Good luck at the Independent shop.

Re: Damn! Help Needed

I wonder if that sound is the electronic vacuum pump turning on.

Re: Damn! Help Needed

Dutch- I believe the electric sound you're hearing with the ignition on but engine not started is the throttle body adjusting itself.

Eric- which vacuum pump are you referring to? The air pump under the front portion of the engine cover doesen't kick on until you start the engine I believe.

And the center Diff lock is being turned on.

Well that's a different air pump- you're talking the locker vacuum pump, which on Dutch's truck is along the driver fender near the front of the engine compartment. That would turn on if you engage lockers with the engine off.

I'm talking the air injection pump that's under the front engine cover, the one you have to remove to get the airbox/air filter box off the top of the engine. The air injection pump for sure doesn't turn on before the engine is started.

Final Report

This was the final report from the high end Indie shop in Atlanta.

Basically, they could not get it to not start and could not determine any problems.

Dutch,

the new owner will be happy to take over your great special G500, even with this "non-problem" issue.

Merry Christmas to all of You

Re: Damn! Help Needed

This problem ended up being a bad ignition switch not sending power to the K40.
We have bypassed it so that the K40 is now powered by switched power from the relay panel independent of the ignition switch while we wait for a new ignition switch to come from Germany.

It cut out while driving after another episode of no start the prior day. Fortunate to get it into a good shop while the problem was still occurring.
