Front axle gasket / seals question

I am replacing the wheel bearings and king pin bearings. MB classic sent me the seals, but I’m not sure I have everything correct.
Here is a picture of the axle view

Looking At the picture, I have 86(metal), 94 (rubber not split), 93(rubber split), 97 (paper gasket), don’t have 92 unless original metal with cork gasket?, 91 have original metal ring . When I put it together and turn the rubber gasket slips down causing gap. I’m thinking that 94 might inset in 92( which I might not have). Thanks.

I appreciate any help and input on correct reassembling or the components.

I can’t attach the photo. Sorry. I’ll try to save it and post it.

RE: Front axle gasket / seals question

Inkblotz and others. My vin: WDB 463 228 170 90 348

thank you for the picture you provided. I have been able to upload a parts picture, some actual pictures and a picture of a retainer and seal being removed from my old work shop book. I will use #'s from the parts picture I have provided.

The hub takes a metal split ring first # 86, then a yellow rubber seal (closed # 94 or split # 93), # 97 is the paper gasket. # 91 the last metal bracket (retainer) . I do not have # 92 on my G, however i wonder if I should. Does # 92 hold the rubber seal to keep it from sliding up and down and does it replace 3 91 in the photo?

My original split metal ring # 86 had a type of cork gasket. I think it was updated to the rubber gasket.

I have all new parts from MB Classic, except for picture # 92.

Also, you see that there are two items # 83, a solid and a split rubber seal. Are both used or only one? I tried the split seal first and could not get it to stay in place, so I used the closed seal.

My problem is that when I assemble everything and lock the hub on the axel with the top and lower king pin's, that the rubber seal slides around and is not "even' as it presses against the chrome swivel ball.

My old workshop book shows a picture that has a metal retaining ring that appears to hold the rubber seal in place. However, my G did not have this part and i don't know if it should and was removed before I bought it, or if I just let the closed rubber seal float around the chrome swivel ball. Could this be the part # 92 in my picture.

Last question. the work shop book I have says that a closed gasket is used up to axle build # xxx and a split is used after build xxx. I have both and I can not figure out how you would keep the split gasket from moving and falling out. So, for now I am using the closed gasket.

Inkblotz, I have all of the parts shown in the picture you posted, the front split metal ring, the rubber closed gasket, the paper seal and the original rear metal retaining bracket.

I wonder if I need a different retaining bracket that would hold the rubber seal?

thanks again for your help and your follow up advice.

Alex.

RE: Front axle gasket / seals question

Using your VIN # this is what your axle calls for.

RE: Front axle gasket / seals question

Are you saying that I need both gaskets#83, the closed circle one and the one that is split?

If yes, is the split one on the inside or on the outside closest to the chrome ball?

I will compare your parts listing to what MB classic sent me

Thanks
Alex

Re: Front axle gasket / seals question

Sorry I was trying to post a photo but this site is not Mac friendly. Only the solid or the split gasket. I recommend the solid. As with the split you will also need the staple shaped piece which keeps it together. The photo that I show for your VIN does not show #92 at all.
OK got it loaded. This is from the EPC specific to your VIN.

Re: Front axle gasket / seals question

Thank you very much. The staple is what I am missing, that attaches the rubber closed gasket to the metal retaining ring and holds the gasket in place, so it does not slip. I did not see that. I really appreciate your help.

Re: Front axle gasket / seals question

Do not buy the split washer or you will need the staple. Buy the solid one. You will need to pull the hub to install it.

RE: Front axle gasket / seals question

Inkblotz,

I appreciate your time and help. I have both the closed gasket and the split gasket. I have used the closed gasket. My problem has been that when I put it all together, that the yellow rubber closed gasket slides up/down and sideways when it is installed, as there is nothing to hold it in place between the retaining plates.

the rubber gasket, part # 83 (inside gasket) fits between the metal Seal retainer # 74 and # 77. However, there is no grove or attachment point on the two metal seal retainers to hold the gasket from moving. When I bolt it up (not tightened down) and it presses against the chrome swivel ball, the gasket slides, making it uneven in appearance or not uniform in spacing. Maybe this is not a concern.

Your picture shows the staple , # 80, which I did not have in my parts picture (thank you).

Question. would it be advisable to get the staple # 80 and use it on the closed gasket, placing the staple through the holes in # 74 and into the closed gasket outer band, to hold the gasket in place on the inside seal retainer?

OR because I am using the closed gasket, I do not use the staple and the appearance of the spacing of the closed rubber gasket # 83 is not a problem. The gasket is not showing any gaps between the chrome swivel ball and the retainer's, it is just the appearance at this time.

My concern is that with nothing holding the rubber gasket in place, other than the torque when tightened between the two retainer plates, that it could move when I drive the G and turn the wheels.

Thank you again.
Alex.

Re: Front axle gasket / seals question

In my photos the steel retainer # 74 keeps it from sliding inward. the plastic gasket has a tapered inner edge that should face the ball. So basically you have #74 the inner steel retainer, then the flexible tapered seal, then the outer steel retainer #77 and the multiple bolts that hold it in place. As you bolt it down reach around and make sure the flexible solid gasket #83 seals properly. I just got through doing mine today as my solid one finally broke in half.
