Front rotors Solid vs Vented

Hi Everyone,
My 93 500GE has had vented front rotors.
I ordered new front rotors from classic Mercedes (twice) using the vin.
Both times they have sent me solid front rotors.
So, I now wonder if before I bought my two 93’s. The front rotors were changed to vented.

Question. Is it ok to use the solid rotors if I change both sides or will it result in decreased stopping ability, which is already not great on the older G’s?

I can find vented ones aftermarket but welcome your advice
Thank you.
Alex

Re: Front rotors Solid vs Vented

Are your old vented rotors vented on the edge (looks like 2 rotors put together)? or are they just regular rotors that are cross drilled (holes in a pattern on the surface? If they are the true Later model G500 vented brakes these are wider and the calipers are also wider to accommodate them. On my 91 I had the non vented type and upgraded to the vented (wider) type. Not a dramatic change in braking, With the new vented brakes I had to replace my original factory star wheels as the rotors were hitting the wheels.

A little FYI the only difference between the vented and non venter rotors is with the vented ones they have added a spacer between the 2 halfs with tiny rubber sealing washer to accommodate the wider opening.

Re: Front rotors Solid vs Vented

My old ones are vented, like two welded together with vents on the outside edges. I will find them with aftermarket replacement. When MB updated the epc, it appears they screwed up and have a lot of 300GE parts listed for the 500GE. I am finding other parts like radiator hoses are also not the correct 500GE part when ordered. It’s frustrating.
Thanks

Re: Front rotors Solid vs Vented

Alex, as you know the 500GE was a limited AMG run of V8 463 based on the 300GE. Not surprising that EPC is not accurate for them I suppose. Perhaps that is because it was pre AMG merger and the datacard reflects the car as it left the factory in Graz.

My 2000 G500 from Neiman Marcus/Europa is also different than the datacard and EPC information with respect to a number of interior components.

I would guess that even relatively current Brabus versions may have this issue as well.

Re: Front rotors Solid vs Vented

I am in the process of rebuilding my G500 calipers (vented disks) with 460 caliper parts (non vented disks)
what I found is that calipers from early 460 to late 463 are almost identical
to allow for the thicker vented disks, spacers were used between the 2 halves of the caliper
will post pictures tomorrow
the spacers are 14mm - meaning the vented disks are 14 mm thicker than the non vented

so, 460 calipers can be modified to fit 463 disks and 463 calipers can be modified to fit 460 disks
however, neither can vented disks be put on the 460 nor can non vented disks be put on the 463
the joint housings between the two is different when it comes to the mounting points of the calipers

Re: Front rotors Solid vs Vented

Yes as I mentioned in your other post. They are basically the same apart from the spacer and the rubber seals required for the conversion. The early 463s did not have vented rotors and the 460 caliper was a viable replacement.

RE: Front rotors Solid vs Vented

Thank you Harold!

That confirms that they have always been vented. Just another day in MB epc not being correct
