Exhaust for 300GD Stock and Aftermarket

Hi Folks,

I’ve been quiet on this forum for a while but have been around for many years.

I’m looking for 2 things exhaust related:

1. The stock configuration for a 300GD …. A schematic would be nice, and if anyone has the actual muffler part numbers used (OEM or aftermarket), that would be greatly appreciated.

2. If anyone has successfully muffled the noise for a passenger-side-only configuration, what the details of that might be?

I imported my G from Europe in 2008. Shortly after I added a two tank veg system so I could run on diesel or waste veg oil. The veg tank went between the frame rails and this forced the exhaust to change from going passenger - centre - driver side - exit, to simply exiting on the passenger side. The original muffler seemed to keep it quiet enough but when that failed I have never been able to get it quiet enough again. The problem is where I live - at the top of a steep hill and my poor neighbour is the benefactor of noise bouncing off their house. Normal driving, and as an occupant, it isn’t a problem. Now I’m thinking of giving up and removing the veg system and going back to the stock configuration. I haven’t been able to find a supplier for the OEM exhaust system, so have to try to find alternative parts.

I used to have a print out of the exhaust layout that I believe I got from Harald’s CD but I can’t locate it and I can’t find it on the CD.

I appreciate any help.

RE: Exhaust for 300GD Stock and Aftermarket

Hi Jim, if you post up or PM me your VIN, I could look it up in EPC and put the diagrams up here. The early 463 are all very similar up to 2000. I had a 1997 G300 diesel that had an almost identical looking exhaust to my Europa G500.
Here is the muffler on the driver side outside the frame rails on my 97 G300. Passenger side has a single down pipe to a catalyst and then up and over the frame in the back.

I sold this car to a guy in San Francisco 18 months ago however.

RE: Exhaust for 300GD Stock and Aftermarket

Alan McR has an aftermarket exhaust on the passenger side of his 1996 G300td, maybe try to PM him for more info on that.

Re: Exhaust for 300GD Stock and Aftermarket

Thanks Otiswesty,

VIN: WDB46332817078071

Thanks for the details on your now sold G.

I am guessing here, but Alan may have one of the stainless mufflers that Warren was selling many years ago. I used that one and it did seem to work well for a long time but eventually there was nothing left inside it. I don't think they are available anymore. Also, I think Alan says the turbo takes some of the volume out of his exhaust so he can get away with the single.

I've got the Magnaflow 12276 which is a SS packed 24" body straight through muffler. It fits the underseat spot perfectly.

In combination with the overly restrictive turbo it is quite reasonable.  That being said, I can tell whether the wastegate is open or closed, just from the sound.

The guy at Timevalve in Florida built me a kit when I changed over from gas to diesel even included a spool of MIG wire, expensive but as my Dad told me "If you buy a quality product or service, you are only piss off about it once"
