New and easy to make seat install tool

Removing the spring cylinder is easy as it only takes a pair of screwdrivers.
But putting it back in is a pain.
I have for some time thought that there could be a easier way to make the seat spring cylinder compression tool.
After some thought and experimenting I found what I think is the solution.
I will show photographs below how I achieved this new tool in 3 hours of bench time.
Now that I know how to do it, That time should be reduced to 2 hours.
First I ordered a 3/8" square steel rod 12" long for Amazon.
Then I looked thru the tool drawer to find a set of old vise grips.
First I made a bending jig: 5/16" bolts spaced 3/8" apart. Slip fit.
Then I heated the 3/8" sq. stock with a propane torch.
An you need a pipe to bent the stock, it will be very hot.
I bent it until I achieved the radius I wanted.
I then cooled it and ground the radius to a fit size.
I measured the distance between the mounting pin centers of the spring shock: 19 CM or 7.5 inches locked in place.
The shock is slightly longer when completely open, say two to three MM.
I had a shock that Dutch sent me years ago.
So I mounted two 5/6" inch pins and set the shock on it with tension just as it was monted in the vehicle.
I ground the vise grips thin and cut a grove in the 3/8 stock and pinned it to the visegrips.
I drilled a press fit hole in the stock and the visegrips and drove a roll pin in.
I modified the tool to make it more toolbox ready.

RE: New and easy to make seat install tool

I have one of the ones you made before
http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.asp?tid=21897&po...

Thanks for the updated technique.
I will need to replace the spring cylinder for my jump seat soon. I'm planning to use the hose clamp technique like Eric suggested. It's a bit smaller than the seat spring cylinder I think,

@otiswesty:
I could make you one that is shorter than the one shown.
If you are going to replace the cylinder, send it to me so I can fit it exactly.
There again, all I need is the mounted measurement between centers of the pins.
I have not looked for new vise grips to know the cost.
I am set up to make them as the jigs are now made and that was part of getting started.
If you are going to continue to remove the jump seat, I suggest you get a tool.

Re: New and easy to make seat install tool

I decided to make a few more of the tools.
I got a 6' length of 3/8" stock today.
I made three tools this evening.
Actually, I had prepared three Vises grips in advance.
I decided to not use a roll pin and instead I used a 6-32 screw.
That makes it easier to remove the pin and put them a in short space.

The smaller Stabilus shock on the jump seat is 6" long in the extended position and 6 3/8" in length when removed
Looks like it is 5.866 inches between the centers of mounting pins.

RE: New and easy to make seat install tool

Thanks for the updated tool. I used the new tool to replace my jumpseat strut and it worked great.
No more floppy jumpseat when going down bumpy roads or hitting pot holes.
