Wont shift into park after drive

Hello all,

Hope everyone is doing well.

My 2002 G500 will shift out of park and into all the gears but sometimes (usually coming back into the driveway or a parking spot) shifter will not move past ‘N’ and into park. I don’t want to break anything by pushing but it will not shift with any pressure either. Shifter seems stuck. Obviously, I can’t take the key when it happens either. There is no rhyme or reason why that I’ve been able to figure out.

After it’s stuck, If I shift it back to drive and am able to go for a short drive (5 mins), most of the time I am able to go to park smooth as silk. I’ve never been stuck but I know one of these days I’m going to find myself in an impossible position.

Any ideas? Truck is otherwise faultless with 225k miles on it now.

I would recommend a new shifter module if you think yours is original
My 1999 G500 has 200K miles, I have had to replace my shifter twice.

I have no reason to think it’s not original.

Do you know what part goes bad? Does it have anything to do with the plastic hook like in the S and E classes? Sorry, as you can tell, I haven’t opened it up yet.

As you can tell by the number, it is a ML part. The trouble shooting and rebuild has been posted here before. Looks like the C-class version can be used as well.

Re: Wont shift into park after drive

Thank you very much, I’m planning to open it up this week.

Btw, mine is a 02’… I hope the internals are the same.

The '02 has the touch shift. A really nice feature compared to the prior version 722.6 shifter which has a traditional D-4-3-2-1 shifter tree.
I'm also very curious to see how it looks inside.
