recommended interval for serpentine belt replacement

Guys,

Is there a recommended service interval for serpentine belt replacement on a 2002 G500? My last replacement was at least 10 years ago and I am wondering if I am on borrowed time.

Thanks all,

G4me

Re: recommended interval for serpentine belt replacement

Do you see any cracks on the ribbed part of the belt??

I’d be more concerned about the tensioner pulley than the belt, can’t hurt to do both. The pulley likes to explode leaving you stranded.

Re: recommended interval for serpentine belt replacement

10 years is about as long as I am comfortable with a serpentine belt. Shorter if I detect any cracks in the ribs as Paulunm points out.

Really good discussion some years ago on the tensioner and idler pulley. http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.asp?tid=22507&po...

Fernweh/Karl's website is my go to for replacements https://www.g-wagenaccessories.com/products/aluminum-idler-pulley-fo...

The bearings are never life time, are not expensive and will be replaced about every ten years when I do the serpentine.

RE: recommended interval for serpentine belt replacement

I would recommend 60-80K miles along with the stock pulleys at the same time. If you have the G-wagenaccessories pulleys, then I would recommend to change the removable pulley bearings at the same interval.

RE: recommended interval for serpentine belt replacement

Guys,

Thanks. Yes running Karl's Idler pulley. Looks like it is time to place order with Karl for the tensioner pulley and a replacement idler bearing. No cracks noted on the belt but will replace while doing pulleys.

Thanks for the responses/help.

RE: recommended interval for serpentine belt replacement

I've seen belt lengths of 2380 and 2390mm for the G500. Not sure if one size is better, but I typically buy Continental belts.
