Where to buy an early W460 brake master cylinder?

Need to replace my master brake cylinder on a 1982 RHD W460 280GE (before the serial number break). It appears I need part number 0044301401. Prices seem to be all over the board, and some say a different part number fits my vehicle.

Is there something special about this cylinder? Is it made out of gold? Pelican wants $437.

European outlets cheaper, but unclear if it will fit.

https://www.euro4x4parts.com/en/parts/ref=BMC1052/master-cylinder/oe... lists it for €140,
https://spareto.com/products/fte-brake-master-cylinder/h23935-0-4 €251
https://www.trodo.com/catalogsearch/oem/A0044301201 €166

What will fit? Who sells it at the best price? I don't need a Mercedes brand part, just one that will stop it.

It never is driven over 40 mph (and that is on the motorway) and gets about 600 miles a year. For the past few years it passed its semi-annual inspection with a note that the brakes seemed weak. Turns out it is because the master cylinder is only working on the front brakes. The G is only 41 years old with 405,000 miles on it, so I want to keep it going until the price of a fill-up exceeds my pension.

Re: Where to buy an early W460 brake master cylinder?

What is your VIN number? I am showing the latest part number as 0044302901 but I cannot confirm if it is Right hand drive. Here are all the ones that come up on Sparto.com for this part number: https://spareto.com/oe/0044302901

Or part number: 0034309801 which brings up: https://spareto.com/oe/0044302901

Why don't you just rebuild it. It is not that difficult. From your part number I am showing repair kit: 0004302983 or this: 0014300360

The old fashioned telephone proves still to be the answer. Rang a mechanic who likes me (when he gets customers who put petrol in a diesel or vice versa, he has to pay to dispose of it, whereas we use it on the farm so take it away for free). He just sends MC's to town to be rebuilt and charges the customer $375 or so. I asked who he used in town and he gave me a name. I rang them and they kindly told me everyone in town is a middleman and they all send them to Just Brakes in Penrose, Auckland who reckoned a rebuild would cost NZ$140 and be done by Tuesday. Nice when you cut out the middlemen and four courier trips. I dropped it off on Friday.

For future owners however, if anyone knows the current part numbers and affordable vendors for a RHD W460, and knows if the serial number means something, perhaps post that here as a reply - or if we have a repository of such threads, as a sticky.

Owners of W460 beasts face two problems:

1) Regarding serial numbers where earlier W460 use a different MC than a later model, it is unclear if the later won't fit the earlier, or if it is a better design that is a bolt-in retrofit. The most popular number is A 004 430 29 01

2) Prices are all over the place for what is in the end a very simple part.

...US$340 (sale price discounted from $460 at https://www.mboemparts.com/oem-parts/mercedes-benz-brake-master-cyli...
...US$291 at Expedition Imports
...€233 https://spareto.com/products/ate-brake-master-cylinder/03-2125-2102-...
...£288 https://www.autodoc.co.uk/ate/954468
...€255 https://www.auto-doc.ie/trw/2209720

There seems to be nothing more complicated with this part than other MC that sell for $80. Is there something special about A 004 430 29 01 to merit the high price?

I suppose what we really need is a thread or sticky where every forum member can list Make/Model/Year/Serial/RHD-LHD/ and then the part number, the price paid and the internet link as well as comments as to how it worked out.

I would think that the left hand and right hand would have the same internals. So the rebuild kit is the way to go.
