Axle service question

I need to service the front axle. I am pretty mechanical but obviously don't have every tool referenced in the service manual.
For those who have done it, can it be done? How long did it take? Would you have rather brought it to a shop?

Re: Axle service question

My last G front axial was serviced every 25K miles.
I used a waterproof grease in the hub swivels.
I put in the green water-proof grease bought from Advance auto.
It takes a 14 mm allen wrench to remove the plug.
I am due up on the 2016 and bought an air operated pneumatic grease gun to take the pain out of the numerous pumps.
Mind you these pneumatic guns are rated for a max 80 psi.
I pump about a 1/2 tube in each, more if needed.
Inspect your pinion seals for leakage.
The 85-95 weight oil is Mbenz required weight.

Re: Axle service question

Nopec. When you say service the front axle do you mean a rebuild of the hubs and replace bearings?

Re: Axle service question

If you need the rebuild there are kits available: https://expedition-imports.com/front-axle-service-kit-2002-and-newer...

There is a post here regarding rebuild: http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.asp?tid=19242&po...

The hub nut tool is the main specialty tool needed.

Re: Axle service question

Yes, a rebuild. I should have been more specific

Re: Axle service question

takes 10 hours labor if you have done it before so budget 20 hours for 1st time

You need the slotted hub socket to remove the hub

you will need a good torque wrench

All the other tools are normal metric sockets and wrenches

note that you may have some downtime after taking it all apart because you may need more parts than just bearings and seals like perhaps CV joints (or just order those too)

If you want to do the CV joints you will need a 30 ton press or just bring to a local machine shop and pay them to remove the old joints and press on the new ones

Make sure to get the CV boot on correct and strapped correct

Make triple sure you get the bearing preload correct when reassembling

As mentioned above use the water proof high temp synthetic green or red grease, not standard grease

You can buy it in tubes from Mercedes or get cheaper online, does not need to be Mercedes but needs to be similar type

Get the factory service manual you have to follow it to a T, or bring it to wolfgang's in NJ to have it done

Make sure to change your inner oil seals while you have it apart, they are cheap and easy.

you can email me if you want more info

about to replace the wheel bearing since the cv boots are shot.
I read in a few posts that the front axel might need to be locked to remove . is this so?
