ML350....3.5 V6 Underated?

My dealer was the one who actually pointed this out after I commented on how strong the V6 pulled during back to back test drives of an ML350 and 500. He claims MB purposely underated the output of the V6 because they wanted to keep some seperation between V6 and the V8, until the new more powerful V8 unit arrives. He believes the output of the V6 in the ML is actually closer to 300HP. I usually take what salesman say with a grain of salt but this time I'm inclined to agree.

MB Claimed 0-60 times/hp (North American figures)

ML320 = 8.6s (221hp diesel)
ML350 = 8.4s (268hp)
ML500 = 6.9s (302hp)

So according to MB the ML350 with 47hp more and 150lbs less than the diesel is only 0.2s faster, but the ML500 with +34hp and 100lbs heavier than the ML350 is a whole 1.5s faster??

ML350
C&D ran 7.1s...... http://www.caranddriver.com/roadtests/9477/2006-mercedes-benz-ml350...
Motorweek ran 7.2s.... http://www.mpt.org/motorweek/reviews/rt2438a.shtml

ML500
Motor Trend ran an ML500 6.7s.... http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/suv/112_0509_2006_luxury_suv_co...

I think I have to agree with the salesman on this one, although the V8 was definately stronger, I think the V6 is more powerful than MB lets on. IMO 280-285hp would be a better estimate.

MB tends to underrate the horsepower of their cars; unlike other companies which usually overrate them. However I think 280 is a bit of a stretch. Only way to find out is to dyno it.

300 hp would not surprise me, sometimes in the E350 after driving that then getting in the M3 I think the E350 could keep up with the M until about 40. And I have heard of a few E350 kill stories taking out 350Z's and G35 sedans.

350Zs and G35 sedans are nothing for the E350. Even moreso for the C350. Someone on MBWorld has a C350 is constantly racing G35s, 350Zs etc. Hasn't had the chance to line up against a 330i yet, he said.

Have a look at the difference in torque between the diesel 320 and petrol 350. I think you'll find it's the diesels low end grunt that accounts for the minimal difference in their 0-60 times. You're right not to believe the salesman. Rgds

The 350 has prodigious power, no doubt about it.

But when you stomp on it, the car has to decide which of its seven speeds to use
