ML320 CDI oil/fuel filter change

My friend wants to know how to since he already does the oil and fuel filters on his 06 VW TDI. I've seen the CDI engine with the beuty cover off and might I say its a mechanics nightmare.

FWIW, that cover is there for more than beauty. It is ported to run cooling air past the turbo, and down and out past the firewall. I have been told that they blistered the hood paint on test vehicles before they used that cover to move the heat.

As to the oil change, use a vacuum pump to remove the oil through the dipstick. The oil filter cap is at the left front of the engine - under the cover. It takes a special wrench to remove it. Use 9.5 qts of the proper oil, or the warranty is void.

It's a very simple and easy job.

Re: ML320 CDI oil/fuel filter change

Some great posts here,

Few questions...

1. You mean to tell me there is no Oil drain plug on a 2007 ML 320 CDI? I have to get it out of the dipstick?
2. How do I get those air filters out of there? It's dang tight in there!
3. You don't void the warranty when you take off that cover do you? (Too late now!!)

1.) There is an oil drain plug. However, by the time that you get the bottom engine shield off, the oil plug removed, drain and clean up all the mess under there from the splashing, you could have had the oil sucked out the dip stick tube, the filter replaced, the 9.5 qts of new oil added and driven to the grocery store and back. Plus, you can do the whole dip stick tube suction oil change in your Sunday going to meeting suit; and not get it dirty.

2.) I haven't approached that chore yet. You're right, it does look tight.

3.) Nope.

Re: ML320 CDI oil/fuel filter change

Appreciated,

What cost are we talking for an oil stick sucking machine (or whatever the thing is called)?

When it comes to the oil change MAKE SURE you use the proper oil recommended my MB. Current is Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-40. This is a new oil and most likely is only available through MB & Dodge dealers. This oil is necessary because of the new Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) on the 2007 CDI.

Here is a description of the oil from one of Mobil's spec sheets:

Product Description
Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is an advanced performance synthetic engine oil designed to provide exceptional cleaning power, wear protection and overall performance. Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is engineered to help prolong the life and maintain the efficiency of Car Emission Reduction Systems in both diesel and gasoline powered automobiles that require an oil that is approved against Daimler Chrysler's MB 229.51 specification.

Features and Benefits
Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is made with a proprietary blend of high performance components formulated to be fully compatible with the latest Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF's) and Gasoline Catalytic Converters (CAT's). Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 has been designed to deliver outstanding overall performance and protection. Key features and benefits include:
Applications Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is approved against Daimler Chrysler MB 229.51.
It is not recommended for 2-Cycle or aviation engines, unless specifically approved by the manufacturer.

I have attached the complete Mobil spec sheet for this oil.

Although the papers that come with the vehicle do say that you can use a "non-spec" oil in a pinch they are actually talking about just using a few drops or a quart at the most.

Good luck.

RE: ML320 CDI oil/fuel filter change

Well,

I guess it's a good thing that it only needs to be changed every 10k miles or so. Hopefully in a few years there will be other brands out there that meet the MB specs...other than the AMSOIL stuff.

AMSOIL is good, but I don't know if that would be overkill for my purposes. Then again, it is an expensive vehicle......

Do the US models have the particulate filters and if so where are they located?

Yes. It's in the exhaust system under the truck.
