463 workshop manual

Hi everyone,

I have the 463 workshop manual on DVD from Hara ld and I have the 07/2004 EPC from MB.

The 463 DVD does not have my engine. MY 1993 500 GE has the 117.965 engine and I want to find detailed info on how to do several repairs. Timing chain replacement, Valve guide seal replacement, etc.

Do any of you have a good source for a manual on my engine?

I changed the spark plugs today, and this was quite an adventure. First I had to figure out that if I look up a 1990 560SL, that it had my engine, so I can buy spark plugs at the local auto parts store.

Yesterday, my engine coolant light came on and would not go out. I have to travel on Monday, so off to the local MB dealer I went. $419.00 later, they have replaced the thermostat, flushed the radiator, replaced the coolant and told me that I also will need a new leveling switch which they do not have in stock. Future cost for part & labor $80.00.

They also very tell me that they will change my spark plugs for $110.00, change all my belts for $220.00 and flush my brake fluid for around $100.00. I told them thanks but not right now. I will do these myself.

It took me 3 hours to change the spark plugs as I had to try to figure out how to remove the air filter and then the plugs were hard to get out, but the job is done.

My engine is burning about 1 quart of oil for every 1000 miles I drive. A little black smoke comes out of the exhaust. I have 133,000 miles on the G.

So, do you think that it is the valve guide seals leaking or could it be piston rings? No knocking sound. Also when I pulled the spark plugs the left side plugs had black marks on them, the right side were all nice and brown color.

So, a detailed engine workshop manual would help.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Alex.

A possible source would be Schiff European Automotive Literature Inc. 881 Dyer Avenue, Cranston, RI 02920. They have an Ebay connection, you might try there. Books 4 Cars is another source. Mercedes has stopped producing paper manuals.

Re: 463 workshop manual

Well Mercedes has never produced a manual for the 500GE. A good source for any kind of (out of print) manuals is books4cras.com I bought a M117 engine manual from them some time ago.

RE: 463 workshop manual

Hi,
Is your 500GE a 463.228 with the 117.965 engine?
I have found a reference in my WIS manual - what are you looking for?

I do have also an original Mercedes-Benz paper Service Manual Engine M116 - 117 (V-8) it covers Engine Type 117.981, 982, 983, 984 and 117.985.
The WIS shows the 500GE with the 117.965 engine but also referenced in that engine section back to the older 107 type cars. So the .965 engine might be close to the older engines(450SL/SLC)......

RE: 463 workshop manual

Thank you for your reply's.

Yes my 500 GE is a 463 228. My Vin is: WDB46322817090348

I do have the 117.965 engine and the only place I seem to find this engine number is in the mid 80's 500SL.

I really would like to find as much detail on the engine as possible. Things like, how to change all the belts, replace the timing chain, replace the valve guide seals and other major items that someone with a little knowledge, a good reference guide and the correct tools can do.

Anything you can email me on the engine would be great. I will try to find a print book as you have recommended.

WIS? Where can I purchase one of these? Also, what does this have that is not on the 463 Workshop Manual DVD from Harald?

Thank you again for all of your help.

With best wishes,

Alex.

RE: 463 workshop manual

Hi Alex,

My original MB Engine Manual was printed in 1979 and covers all the aspects for the 116/117 V8 engine. I'm not sure how much different your engine is compared to the 117.xxx models. It looks like they opened it up to 5 liters, but the rest should be still applicable.
When I look into WIS (Workshop Information System) under your G-wagon 463.228 (BTW I have the same G as a 300GE) and bring up the valve stem seals screen it shows the different valve guide type and seal application back to the 80's - so maybe the engines are the same or at least very close.
The Mercedes Manual is oven 1" thick - so lots of pages - nothing easy to email. If you like you, can borrow it or buy it from me.
Please email/PM me and we can talk about it & WIS
