RE: G 300 91/92

I think these had a reputation of needing updated head gaskets. It might have been replaced already. Worth checking.

You'll need to know how much it costs to ship to Chicago for when you decide to give it to me.

RE: G 300 91/92

The headgasket problem is better known in the M104 engine. I had a 300GE and do not recall the headgasket being an issue. I do recall however that valve stem seals can fail leading to oil burning and attendant smoking. I replaced them myself fairly easily. There is also the center driveshaft issue. Early 300's used the double u-joint style like the 460 series. Somewhere around '92 they were updated to the newer double CV joint shaft. The later one with the rubber boots on each end is preferable for less vibration. Neither is "bad" though. Very solid versions of the G IMO. The auto trans will start in second gear making the truck feel sluggish. There is a first gear start modification but it used to be expensive, not sure if it still is.

I don't agree, Brent. The M103 has a headgasket Problem. I know! So check out the milage of the vehicle. After 60-80.000 Km the gasket is done!

I mean, If you dont care about leaking oil, then there is no Problem. Also the Visco clutch could be a problem too.

I had head problems in my 124. at around 80k - head gasget and valve seals - oil leak from the front of engine. In all it was not as not nice as the 110 in the 280ge. Hydraulic lifters were nicer than the things in the 110 and the oil filter was nice and easy to get at. But I could never get it to idle smoothly even after changing many bits. It was always lumpy

You are right Klaus, it's just an oil leak problem. All MB mechanics pointed it out to me and I replace the gasket with 110K miles - good time to look at the valves & stem seals. The mechanic replaced two exhaust ones, reseated the rest of them and replaced the stem seals. BTW the waterpump and visco clutch were also replaced - while we working on this and the head is off.........
